From the Malegaon blast case in 2006 to the serial blasts in Jaipur, Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai train blasts, in all these cases there’s one common thread - apart from the innocents who were killed;  the wrongful arrest of Muslims who were held as accused, suffered for years in jail but eventually, they were 'acquitted' due to lack of evidence. Unlike their arrests, the acquittal hardly makes any news. Many people from the community have suffered for years when booked under the contentious Unlawful Activities Prevention Act or UAPA.

Juan E Mendez is the first United Nations Special Adviser on Prevention of Genocide (2004-2007), appointed by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He also served as the president and commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and as the UN Special Rapporteur on torture. Currently, he is a professor of human rights law at the American University in Washington, DC. Mendez has termed the situation in India, home to 200 million Muslims, “dangerous” and “deeply disturbing”.

It’s 80% vs 20% in U.P. Assembly election, says Yogi Adityanath

The 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election had progressed to a battle of 80% vs 20%, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday, perhaps subtly hinting at the religious composition in the State where Muslims make up over 19% of the population.
