Police mob attacks Muslim cop; wife suffers miscarriage

A week after “unprovoked violence and terror” invoked by police personnel, wife of a Bengali Muslim police constable Suraf Hossain, suffered a miscarriage. On August 6, 2021, Sub-inspector Somnath Das and four others of the Sonarpur police station were looking for Suraf Hossain’s uncle Hossain Ali. Hossain was beaten to pulp and his shirt that had been torn off. In the video viral on social media, the policeman in civil clothing beat him until they break their lathis. When Suraf tried to intervene, he was beaten as well. Samreena, Suraf’s 13-year-old daughter said that she had returned to her house only to find a mob of policemen dragging and brutally beating her father with police lathis. His wrists were tied to his waist, and he had been stripped naked. Suraf had already identified himself as a police officer when Somnath Das shoved him against the wall and punched him in the face. Samreena said that the police tried to snatch her phone after suspecting that she had recorded a video of the incident.

“They thrashed me and ransacked the house when I informed them I didn’t know where the phone was. They only left after finding the phone and my mother’s gold jewellery,” she said. Jahangir Hossain, Suraf’s brother was also beaten unconscious. Suraf, Anwar, and Jahangir Hossain and their families live in Beniabou, a small village in Sonarpur, District South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. His cousins, a Kolkata police policeman, and Indian army troops, all live next door. Priya Sen, the female police officer, used Islamophic slurs and repeatedly hit Suraf in his genitals; Taniya tried to intervene and was beaten in the process. “You all are mullas, and you are in the police. I will see how your husband keeps his job,” she had told Taniya while she was being taken to a nearby hospital. Priya had also forced her to consume painkillers even after Taniya’s repeated insistence that she was pregnant. Taniya’s brothers were also produced at the Baruipur court the same evening and charged with rioting, obstruction of police duties, criminal conspiracy against police, conspiracy to murder, etc. 






Zila panchayat passes proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh

The Zila panchayat of Aligarh passed a proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh, terming it a ‘long-pending demand’.  As per the reports, the proposal was passed in the first meeting of the panchayat without any opposition in the presence of 50 members. It will be forwarded to the state government for approval. Earlier this month, the newly elected Firozabad Zila Panchayat had passed a proposal to rename the district Chandra Nagar, according to officials. BJP leader and block pramukh Lakshmi Narain Yadav, who moved the proposal, said the district was earlier known as Chandrawad but was later renamed Firozabad. Similarly, the Zila panchayat of Mainpuri passed the resolution seeking to rename Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar. According to Zila panchayat members, Mayan Nagar is proposed to be named after sage Mayan who founded the present-day Mainpuri.






Muslim man beaten up for bid to hoist Tricolour

A Muslim man was allegedly beaten up by a group of persons who also issued death threats when he tried to hoist the Tricolour in Baghpat’s Ranchad village on Thursday, Independence Day. “Pro-Pakistan” slogans were also allegedly raised by those who assaulted Babu Khan and the suspects also tore the Tricolour apart, sources said.

“Babu Khan has demanded the immediate arrest of those who have shown disrespect to the national flag and also allegedly raised pro-Pakistan slogans in the village. We are conducting an inquiry and will take action once we complete it,” said Baghpat Sub-Divisonal Magistrate Durgesh Mishra.

In his memorandum, Babu Khan also threatened that he would “immolate himself outside the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow if those responsible for the attack were not arrested soon”, sources claimed.

He also alleged that the local police did not register an FIR and that he then had to submit a memorandum to the SDM.






BJP MLA From Bithoor Threatens Shia Muslims Against Muharram Processions

BJP MLA from Bithoor, Uttar Pradesh Abhijeet Singh Sanga, threatened Shia Muslims against carrying out Muharram processions in the area on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram). He declared that he wouldn’t let the land turn into Karbala, and asked “Hindu brothers” to be ready for “upcoming battle”.

After the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, prominent left-wing author and thinker Sunil P Ilayidam shared a post on Facebook that drew flak for its overtly Islamophobic content. The post read: “There are four crore people in Afghanistan and three and half crore Malayalis. There are more than half lakh Taliban fighters; isn’t the number greater in Kerala? This is genuinely terrifying. This holy book should be viewed just like a loaded gun.” The post also carried an accompanying picture of a Hamas fighter with a Quran in one hand and a gun in another.
