62-year-old Muslim stripped, beaten up by men shouting anti-Muslim slurs in Noida

Date: 4 July 2021

A 62-year-old man, Kazim Ahmed, was attacked by three Hindu men in Noida Sector 37 in the National Capital Region. Kazim Ahmed, resident of Zakir Nagar in Delhi said that he was brutally beaten, harassed and attacked by the group while he was on his way to Aligarh to attend a relative’s wedding. The assailants targeted him for his identity as a visible Muslim, they also raised anti-Muslim slurs against him, Kazim said. “While I was waiting at Noida Sector-37 to get a bus for Aligarh, some people standing at a distance in a white car called me towards them. When I went there they dragged me inside the car, rolled up the windows and started beating me before I could ask or say anything,” he said. The elderly man alleged that he kept pleading to spare him but they didn’t listen and were consistently beating and left him abandoned in a half-dead condition. “They slipped off my pyjamas, attacked me with a screwdriver on the nose, took away all my money, belongings and spectacles. They pulled my beard and tried to strangle my neck with their towel,” the grief-stricken old man told Maktoob Media. “This is not the first attack based on my identity. I was earlier attacked by Gujjars while I was travelling to Aligarh in a train, a year ago,” said Kazim.

Donation drive for Muslim boy attracts Islamophobic comments

Date: 5 July 2021

A crowdfunding drive to fund the medical expenses of a 1-year-old Muslim boy made headlines in Kerala, after the target of Rs18 crore (to buy one of the most expensive medicines in the world) was achieved in less than two weeks. However, amid the good news, several users on social media picked out the religion of the boy to make Islamophobic comments. While one user commented that this boy “should not become a burden on society when he grows up”, another comment was that they had made the donation on the belief that the boy would not “go to herd goats” (a mocking term used to describe people going to join terrorist groups like ISIS). Another profile accused the media of championing people based on their faith. A profile named Krishnamoorthy Iyengar commented that the target had been met because the boy was Muslim. If he was a Christian or Hindu, not even Rs 18 lakh would have been collected, he added. A user named Suneesh Surendran commented that “one more Jihadi” had received a place in India at the cost of Rs18 crore.
