Date: 5 October 2020

After a branch secretary of CPIM was murdered in Thrissur, senior party leader and Kerala finance minister Dr Thomas Isaac commented that RSS was receiving help from organizations such Jamat-e-Islami and SDPI to kill CPIM workers. The organizations were helping RSS in its bid to murder young men who were trying to promote fraternity and compassion, he said in a note. After his comment, Jamat-e-Islami sent a legal notice to Dr Isaac on the grounds that the comments were politically motivated and would serve to spread more Islamophobia in the society.

A Vijayaraghavan, convener of Left Democratic Front in Kerala, said that “minority communalism” was the worst form of communalism. “Can one form of communalism be used to counter another form of communalism? Can minority communalism be raised to combat majority communalism? Wouldn’t that justify the acts of majority communalism? Isn’t minority communalism the worst form of communalism? Shouldn’t we stand together to beat them both?” Vijayaraghavan asked. After the statement created a controversy, Vijayaraghavan clarified that he had not said that minority communalism is more dangerous. Both forms of communalism need to be resisted, he said.
