Cop suspended for beating Imam in Gorakhpur

A police outpost in-charge was suspended for allegedly beating up an Imam while trying to disperse people after the completion of the namaaz at a Mosque in Gorakhpur town of Uttar Pradesh. The cop, Arjun Singh, posted in charge of the Pandey Hata area that falls under the Rajghat police station, was trying to disperse the people after namaaz on Tuesday evening. He later attacked Mohammad Hashim, the Imam, and beat him till the people around intervened. A video clip of the statement of the Imam went viral on social media.

An ugly spat ensued between Payal Rohatgi and Bigg Boss 7 winner Gauahar Khan on Twitter after Rohatgil wrote about the controversial Article 370 which gives the status of an autonomous state to Jammu and Kashmir.. She said that the Kashmiri Muslims should be evicted from Kashmir if Article 370 cannot be removed. She tweeted, "If Article 370 can’t be removed then ask #KashmiriMuslims 2 evict Kashmir. A heated conversation ensued between the two. It came to a point where Payal tweeted and targeted Gauahar's presence in the Bigg Boss house and her relationship with Kushal Tandon. She knows d population of my building then U should know I own d flat . U workout in hijab? Because Muslim women in my building do that.”

Cleric held in UP's Azamgarh for pro-Palestine appeal

Police in Uttar Pradesh arrested a Muslim cleric who allegedly appealed to his community to put up the flag of Palestine on their houses and vehicles after the Friday namaaz, in order to show solidarity with Palestinians in the wake of the violence in the Gaza Strip. The cleric, Maulana Yasir Akhtar, was arrested after he was booked under Section 505 (2) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC. Azamgarh SP Sudhir Kumar Singh said: "It came to our notice that Yasir, a resident of North Churihar Kasba in Saraimir area, made an appeal on his Facebook page, Azamgarh Express, displaying the Palestinian flag and asking the community members to the such flags atop their houses and vehicles after Friday namaaz. "An FIR was lodged against him at Saraimir police station, and he was arrested with the help of the surveillance cell. Further legal action against him is underway."

Comedian called out for his Islamophobic comments

Social media users called out comedian Shubham Gaur for his extremely Islamophobic comments on social media. The comments ranged from portraying Muslims as incestious and a community that exists solely to repair the vehicles of Hindus. One of his comments also suggested that people kick Muslims in the balls to stop them from having too many kids. He also ridiculed Rahul Gandhi for his tweet on Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots, besides insinuating that Zakia Jafri (wife of Ehsan Jafri who was murdered in the Gujarat riots) was shedding “crocodile tears”. In one comment, he asked a “pro-Muslim” user to go to Pakistan.

Islamophobic content in textbook written for Tamil Nadu Open University

The government of Tamil Nadu has initiated investigation against the Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) and the author of the textbook for first year Political Science students containing incendiary content. State Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudy read out a few portions from the book which made remarks about Muslims being allegedly made a vote bank as well as other communal statements. Speaking to the reporters, K Ponmudy read out a portion of the textbook for first year Political Science students at TNOU. The content can be found on page 142 of the textbook, he said, and read out, “Many Indian political parties, especially those against religion like the DMK and the communist parties are converting them (Muslims) into vote banks. They (the parties) are preventing them (Muslims) from integrating into the national path. They (parties) encourage minorities blindly. When Muslims cause riots and violence, these parties don’t condemn that.” The minister then questioned, “Is this something that should be there in a political science textbook? Is this something that should be there in a history book?” Adding that the Vice Chancellor of the university, the Head of the Political Science Department and the author of the textbook couldn’t provide any answers as to why such content was being given to the students, Ponmudy said that action will be taken on everybody involved in this matter. He added that a committee will be set up to review all textbooks of the correspondence courses conducted by all universities in the state to ascertain if such content is being printed as education material.

Fictional story on Muslim boy taking away ‘Hindu Jain’ girl in Andhra’s Nellore viral

Several people on social media circulated a story that claims a ‘Hindu Jain girl’ was taken away by a Muslim boy in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. It further adds that after the incident the Jain community decided to terminate all Muslim employees from jobs across the district and about 10,000 Muslims lost their jobs. As a result, the girl was returned in nine hours. The text ends by pointing out what can be achieved when a community is united. Several people had also circulated the story on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter two years ago. Alt News reached out to B. Srinivasa Reddy, PRO to Superintendent of Police, Nellore in 2019. He stated, “The claim made in the viral text is fabricated to create differences between two communities.” On December 28, 2019 Nellore police filled a rejoinder stating that the viral text is “totally false” and issued a warning that criminal cases will be filed against persons spreading or propagating such rumours.
