127 Muslims slapped with terror charges acquitted after 20 years

Date: 7 March 2021

A court in Gujarat’s Surat acquitted all the 127 accused arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for participating in a meeting organised in Surat in December 2001. Most of the accused were in jail for over 20 years since their arrest over the allegations of being members of a banned organisation Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), an advocate said. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate AN Dave on Saturday acquitted 127 persons arrested on the charges of being members of the banned outfit SIMI, giving them the benefit of doubt. In its order, the court said that the prosecution failed to produce “cogent, reliable and satisfactory” evidence to establish that the accused persons belonged to the SIMI and had gathered to promote the activities of the banned outfit.

Photos of Delhi riots linked to communal tension in Telangana's Bhainsa

Date: 13 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

Following a dispute between two religious sects, Bhainsa came under a strict curfew since March 8. On Saturday (March 13) evening, a battle between two people over a bike accident culminated in fresh violence between two groups. Amid this, two photos of severely damaged properties went viral on social media with the claim that this was how the Muslims attacked the Hindus in Bhainsa and looted and burnt their properties. The first picture shows a man standing on a road and surrounded by burnt shops, buildings, and an overturned car. The second picture shows some policemen standing in the vandalised area. The pictures were shared on Twitter with the caption "In a case of deliberate, largescale violence, a Muslim mob attacked members of the Hindu community and looted and burnt their property in Bhainsa town of Telangana. The Muslim mobs on a rampage also pelted stones at police who rushed to the spot. #SaveHindusOfBhainsa". Though communal violence hit Bhainsa division in Telangana recently, these photos were taken in Delhi after communal clashes broke out in February 2020. The viral photos were more than one year old and had nothing to do with Bhainsa violence.

2011 Video Of Domestic Help Contaminating Water Peddled With Communal Claim

Date: 16 April 2020

Category: Hate speech

Disturbing CCTV footage from 2011 capturing a domestic help contaminating a drum filled with water by mixing urine, was revived online with a false and communal claim that the woman is a Muslim. Fact-checking website BOOM found that the clip is eight-and-a-half years old and that the accused did not belong to the Muslim community. The video was peddled with a Hindi caption claiming 'Mukesh Suri from Bhopal had employed a Muslim domestic help named Hasina. The maid started behaving as per the Islamic tradition and laced Suri's food with spittle and urine'. According to old news reports, the employer Mukesh Suri had installed CCTV cameras in his house to keep an eye on the activities of his domestic help after his wife complained of household items going missing. The woman was recorded in the kitchen CCTV where she can be seen urinating in a tumbler and then mixing it with the drinking water and the food that was being prepared. The accused was out on bail the next day. As per the Dainik Jagran report, the accused domestic help had told the police that she had taken the repulsive step to teach her employer a lesson. She alleged that Suri had displayed undesirable behavior toward her young grand-daughter.

A video of a man caught spitting on a pizza while preparing it was shared across social media platforms. Several people identified the man as ‘shantidoot’ (peaceful), a derogatory term used for the Muslim community. It was suggested that he was an Algerian refugee in London. Twitter user Shefali Tiwari shared the clip, writing, “Scenes from a London restaurant. This peaceful is a refugee from Algeria. It’s simple, avoid this place as soon as you discover who owns it or risk eating saliva-tainted food.” The caption also encourages others to boycott ‘Muslim-owned businesses’. According to AP News, the man in the video is Jaylon Kerley, who was fired from his food service job in Detroit, USA, in 2018 after the clip went viral. Medical book claims Tabligh members spread Covid-19 in India

Date: 16 March 2021

Category: Slander

The authors and publishers of a prominent medical reference book published earlier this year, which allegedly sought to paint Tablighi Jamat members in a poor light, apologised and committed to delete the offensive paragraphs in a reprint edition soon. The development came after the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) South Maharashtra Unit, raised serious objections to the book, "Essentials of Medical Microbiology" published by Jaypee Publications, New Delhi. The book has references to the much-maligned Tablighi Jamaat held in New Delhi early March 2020 and willy-nilly blaming it for "an explosive outbreak" of Covid-19 with over 4,000 cases. In another reference, it claims that there were 9,000 Indians and 960 foreigners from 40 countries, most cases were asymptomatic but detected positive after they returned home, and led to "several clusters of cases in various states" in the country. SIO's Secretary Raafid Shahab and Joint Secretary Musaddiq Ul Moid said that this was despite several local, high court and Supreme Court judgements which have categorically ruled out the role of Tablighis in the spread of Covid-19 in the country last year.

Taj Mahal Will be Renamed as Ram Mahal, Claims BJP MLA

Date: 14 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

Agra’s iconic Taj Mahal will be renamed as Ram Mahal, claimed Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA from Baira constituency, Surendra Singh. Stirring up a new controversy, the BJP MLA told reporters that Taj Mahal used to be a Lord Shiva temple before it was deconstructed and rebuilt into the famous tomb. This is, however, not the first time the BJP MLA made the shocking claim. In 2018, Singh had said that all monuments in India built by Mughal emperors should be renamed. “A place, if named after a Mughal Emperor, stinks, but if the same place is renamed after Dr. Abdul Kalam then its fragrance does wonders,” he had said.

Petition seeks removal of Gyanvapi mosque

Date: 13 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

A district court in Varanasi has issued notice in a case seeking the “restoration” of a temple at the site of Gyanvapi mosque in the city. The suit was filed on behalf of deities, Shiva, Maa Shringar Gauri and Ganesh. Sabrang reported that ten individuals who have filed the suit have alleged that the temple was destroyed on orders of Aurangzeb in 1699. The suit asks for “restoration of performance of rituals at the principal seat of an Ancient Temple at the Gyanvapi mosque area,” according to the Sabrang report. In 2020, a group of individuals moved a Mathura civil court claiming that the Idgah mosque at Mathura, built during the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in 1669-70, is the exact birthplace of Krishna. In language similar to the Gyanvapi Mosque plea, the petition sought the “removal of encroachment and superstructure illegally raised”.

After right-wing advocates raked up a controversy over the use of Urdu language in the name plate of Chintaman Ganesh station, which is yet to be inaugurated, the name was found erased from the board. The Hindi and English names remain. Hindutva advocates, including the monk Acharya Shekar of Awahana Akhara, had been demanding that the Urdu name be removed because the railway station was built opposite a temple. The monk also stated that this was just a start, and they will be making moves to get Urdu names removed from all stations named after Hindu gods and goddesses.

Suicide of Hindu man in Pakistan communalized in India

Date: 8 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

Many news organisations claimed that five members of a Hindu family were killed in Pakistan. The news reports portrayed the incident as an atrocity against the Hindus in the Muslim majority nation, Pakistan. Times Now claimed that the family’s murder was another instance of crimes against the minority Hindu community in Pakistan. “Atrocities against Hindus continue in Pakistan…This is a story of five members of a Hindu family brutally murdered in Pakistani Punjab…What is unfortunate is that no one has investigated in this regard…One thing we keep on seeing is Imran Khan giving lessons and sermons on the human rights violation in India but what exactly is happening in his backyard, he tries to hardly do anything,” said Times Now reporter Pradeep Dutta. The channel subsequently reported that the BJP has demanded that the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) takes note of crimes against Hindus in Pakistan. ANI credited Pakistan-based The News International in its report. “Social activist Birbal Das in Rahim Yar Khan told The News International that Ram Chand was a Meghwal Hindu and he was 35-36 years old. He was running a tailoring shop for a long time. He was a peaceful man and living a happy life, and the incident was quite shocking for everyone,” read ANI’s story republished by Hindustan Times, India Today, Yahoo News, India.com, Zee5 and Hindi news outlet Hindustan. WION and Zee News English published a similar report with inputs from ANI. India.com’s report was quote tweeted by BJP member Surendra Poonia who wrote, “That’s why CAA is needed!” Most reports were based on a story by Pakistan-based The News International. However, ANI and several others had selectively quoted the outlet. While The News International said that Ram Chand Meghwal and his family were found dead in their house, it also stated that “the police claimed the killer was the family head, Ram Chand, who slit throats of his wife (Lakshmi Mai), three children over suspicion that his wife had illicit relations”. The report further said, “The complainant, Terath Ram, a brother of Lakshmi Mai, lodged his complaint stating that his brother-in-law, Ram Chand, slit throats of his family members over suspicions.” The Dawn reported that Ram Chand killed his wife and three children before killing himself over unemployment.

Category: Hate speech

A gruesome video of two men hacking another with an axe was shared on social media in the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. It was claimed that the video represented a recent incident from Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer where a man named Rewat Singh was hacked to death. According to Dainik Jagran, Singh had taken part in PM Modi’s ‘thali bajao’ event on March 22 which enraged some locals who attacked him on April 4, subsequently leading to his death a few days later. Singh’s nephew filed an FIR naming Shahid Khan, Sadik Khan and Hamtullah. The same video was also uploaded on YouTube on March 24. As per the description, one Noman Shahid was attacked in Pakistan’s Gojra district. The description also carried the words ” Chak 179 GB.” The incident was reported by The Nation on March 25: “Two men allegedly chopped both legs and both arms of a boy of Chak 179 GB, Gojra on Tuesday.” Gojra is located in Pakistan’s Toba Tek Singh in Punjab. According to a report in The Express Tribune from March 31, the man was attacked by his in-laws with an axe because they disapproved of his marriage to a woman in their family. After Muslim boy beaten up inside temple, head priest lauds act

Date: 16 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

Even as the horrific thrashing of a minor Muslim boy near the Dasna Devi Mandir in Ghaziabad on March 12 sent shockwaves around the country, the temple’s militant Hindutva leader Yati Narsinghanad Saraswati praised his follower Shringi Yadav for giving a “befitting reply to a trespasser”. The Wire had reported in the past that Saraswati had repeatedly made genocidal calls against Muslims in the run up to the Delhi riots of February 2020, which resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people. Responding to the minor boy’s thrashing, the militant leader continued in that vein, saying that instances of ‘trespass’ had been dealt with an “iron hand” in the past, according to the Times of India. The mandir has a board that prohibits Muslims from entering the premises. The minor boy had not read this and entered the temple, apparently to drink water. He was assaulted by a follower of Saraswati, with right-wing groups on social media praising the man for his attack on a 14-year-old. He claimed that the boy “had come with a specific motive on the pretext of drinking water” but could not explain what this motive was.

After a Muslim boy was brutally beaten up for drinking water from a temple in Uttar Pradesh and the head priest defended his act, a hashtag under the name ‘Temple board won’t be removed’ (#मंदिर_का_बोर्ड_नही_हटेगा) began trending on Twitter. It refers to a board placed outside the temple declaring that Muslims are not allowed inside, which became a talking point online. Tweets under the hashtag included praise for the head priest, demand for such boards in all temples and suggestions that the beaten boy would have grown to be a terrorist like Ajmal Kasab.

Textbook in Rajasthan calls ‘Islamic terrorism’ a ‘strand of Islam’

Date: 18 March 2021

Category: Hate speech

Drawing the ire of Muslim organisations in the state, the Class XII political science textbook of the Rajasthan government claimed that some experts believe “Islamic terrorism as a strand of Islam”. The textbook, published in 2018 under the former BJP government, has a chapter on ‘Terrorism, Criminalization of Politics and Corruption’. Here it quotes anonymous experts stating that “commitment to a particular religion is the main trend of Islamic terrorism”, under the heading ‘Fanaticism and Terrorism’. Acting on a complaint by the Rajasthan Muslim Forum, an apex body of Muslims in the state, Lal Kothi police filed an FIR late on Wednesday night against the Rajasthan State Textbook Board and Sanjiv Passbook for the objectionable content. The body had earlier held two meetings with police commissioner Anand Srivastava.
