BJP doesn't need votes from Miya Muslims: Assam minister

Date: 31 January 2021

Category: Hate speech

While Congress has stitched a grand alliance with Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) for the upcoming assembly polls in Assam by aiming to oust the BJP from power, Assam minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the "BJP does not need votes from Miya Muslims". The convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) said, "Miya Muslims will not vote for the BJP." He also claimed that the BJP will not win seats — which are in the hands of Miya Muslims — in the upcoming assembly polls in the state. "They have an agenda, and they didn't vote for us in the panchayat election and even in 2014. As long as social evils like talaq and religious frenzy continue in their social lives, we don't need their votes," Sarma said. The Assam minister also said, "They have their own agenda, and they don't vote for us. We will not allow them to set up Miya Museum at Sankardev Kalakshetra, we will not allow them to write Miya poetry. Why will they vote for us? We will not win the seats which are in the hands of Miya Muslims."

Category: Hate speech

Kerala-based Hindu Sena leader Pratheesh Viswanath, who put up pictures of worshipping weapons, including guns, along with an inflammatory post on social media, was not booked by the Kerala police despite complaints on their social media page.  “Today is #AyudhPooja. Sivaji Maharaj and Maratte warriors bowed down before Maa Bhavani and fought for the pride and so why you and me living free in this Country. Not time yet to leave weapons if we don’t wish to gift a Pakistan to coming generations. Jai Sivaji Jai Bhavani”, his post on Twitter read. To one complainant, the Kerala Police replied ‘not in Kerala’, although Viswanath has been publicly appearing on many platforms and functions in the state. Several other complaints have also arisen against Viswanath, including for posting many other pictures of weapons and for declaring that he will distribute trishuls among one lakh Hindu men and for publicly asking people to rise up in violence. A group led by Viswanath also allegedly launched a chilli spray attack on activist Bindu Ammini, who had been demanding entry rights for women into Sabarimala. However, in most of these cases, Viswanath has not been questioned or arrested by the Kerala Police.

Hindutva groups stoked communal tensions with MP govt's 'tacit approval': Fact Finding Report

Date: 2 February 2021

Category: Hate violence

A fact-finding team looking into the incidents of communal violence reported in late December 2020 in Madhya Pradesh said that the Hindutva groups which were holding rallies to collect money for the Ram temple in Ayodhya were allowed by the administration and the police to create “an atmosphere of terror” and to burn and loot houses of Muslims. The nine-member fact finding team included a former police officer, journalists and activists. It visited Ujjain’s Beghambagh, Dorona village in Mandsaur district and Chandankhedi village in Indore January 28 and 30 and perceived a “pattern” in all the incidents of communal violence. “In the name of collecting donations for the Ram mandir to be built in Ayodhya, large numbers of armed Hindu youth with saffron flags, weapons and DJs deliberately chose bastis and mohallas with Muslim presence to hold rallies, creating an atmosphere of terror and trying to provoke the Muslim residents there, and foment trouble,” the report said. The report adds that there was retaliatory stone-pelting by Muslim residents in some places, whereas the state government and Hindutva mobs also “demolished and damaged the houses of many Muslims”. The team found that permissions were not taken for the rallies and that the police did not act to protect the citizens. The police and administration were “either silent bystanders when Muslims houses were being demolished or the administration themselves demolished the houses“, the report claims.

BJP functionary gives inflammatory anti-Islam speech, arrested

Date: 1 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

Mettupalayam police arrested Former National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Mahasangh (BJMM) and BJP State working committee member Kalyanaraman on 1 February (Monday). He was arrested with two others for his comments against the Islamic community and the Prophet. The statements were made at a BJP rally on Sunday. Along with him, Jegannathan, the Coimbatore north district president of BJP, and Satheesh Kumar, the party’s divisional secretary were also arrested. A video doing the rounds from the event shows Kalyanaraman making claims that Hindus in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad had bunkers to hide in because they were afraid of Muslims attacking them and insinuating that this fear was banished in 2002 after the violent riots. He further went on to question the manhood of Prophet Mohammad, a statement he has made in the past too, for which he was already arrested in 2016. He explained how he later received bail from the Madras High Court for the same and the judge held that expressing opinions on religious aspects based on an individual’s knowledge of the subject does not amount to blasphemy . This time around however, his arrest was due to the fact that his statements incited violence in Mettupalayam. Speaking to The News Minute, Mettupalayam inspector Sivakumar said that Kalyanaraman’s arrest was based on multiple complaints from several Muslim groups and specifically the local Jamaat alleging that the trio’s speeches and comments were hurting religious sentiments of the Muslim community.

International conferences on Kashmir, other ‘sensitive’ subjects to require ministry’s approval

Date:  31 January 2021

Category: Discrimination

In a set of revised guidelines issued on January 15, the Ministry of Education said that any virtual conference organised by a government department or a publicly-funded university will require approval from their administrative secretary. However, before granting permission, the applicable ministry will be required to ensure that the subject matter for the online event is not related to “security of State, Border, Northeast states”, the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh or “any other issues which are clearly/purely related to India’s internal matter/s”. For conferences that involve discussions around these specific topics, approval will be required from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Centre said. In addition, the names of all participants in virtual seminars will have to be approved in advance by the government as well, the guidelines said. However, it was not immediately clear how these new guidelines would affect international webinars that allow foreign participation by giving open access to a meeting link. Scholars in Kashmir and across India expressed outrage on 2 February over a government order for all public universities and institutions to seek approval before hosting international online forums on Kashmir and other “internal matters.” Experts have said the decision creates an “iron curtain” over free thought.

Union minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha found himself in the midst of a raging controversy after his garlanding of eight men convicted in a lynching case who were recently released on bail went viral and attracted sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Opposition parties condemned Sinha, who is Hazaribag MP, for "honouring and garlanding" the eight men convicted in the killing of coal trader Alimuddin Ansari in Ramgarh in June last year in a case of alleged cow vigilantism. A fast-track court has found 11 persons guilty in the case and sentenced them to life in prison in March. Eight of them had secured bail from the Jharkhand high court. They visited Sinha's residence, where the minister welcomed them with garlands and sweets.

Video of Street Play Portrayed as Actual “Murder of Hindu Woman by Leftist Muslims in Kerala”

Date: 14 September 2017

Category: Hate speech

A video circulated widely on social media as the "murder of a Hindu woman by communists and jihadis" in Kerala has turned out to be fake - in fact it was a scene from a street play. The video tweeted out from handles of right-wing sympathisers was ironically from a street play organised by DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India ) against the murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh. In the video, two men drag the woman out of her car and when she resists, they shoot her. The woman collapses in a heap and a man then addresses the onlookers in Malayalam. The only word non-Malayalam speakers can make out in this monologue is RSS. The video surfaced on social media sites and was tweeted hundreds of times. One of the first to tweet the video was a Twitter user called Amitesh Kumar, who called it “another gory murder in Kerala by Commie/Jihadi goons.” Many twitter users fell to this bit of fake news, including a national news channel that later retracted the story.

'Look at Their Clothes': Modi Plays Communal Card on CAA, Targets Muslim Protestors

Date: 16 December 2019

Category: Hate speech

While students protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Jamia Milia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University had to bear the brunt of police violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided it was the right time to ignite communal sentiments and suggest only Muslims were protesting the new law. Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in Dumka, Jharkhand ahead of the upcoming polls, Modi said that those who were protesting violently against the new Act could be recognised by their clothes. The Congress and its allies, he added, were adding fuel to this fire. “Yeh Congresswale aur uske saathi… halla macha rahe hain, toofaan khara kar rahe hain. Aur unki baat chalti nahin hai to aag janee phaila rahe hain. Jo aag laga rahe hain, TV pe unke jo drishya aa rahe hain, yeh aag lagaane vaale kaun hain, woh unke kapdon se hi pata chal jaata hai (The Congress and its allies are making a noise, creating a storm. And if that doesn’t work, they are spreading a fire… From the visuals on TV, those setting the fire can be identified by their clothes),” Modi said. On cue, BJP-friendly media and BJP social media handles quickly amplified the ‘Muslim’ and ‘anti-Hindu’ aspect of the protest, including through the circulation of fake or misleading videos.

Congress afraid of Hindus, Rahul Gandhi fled to Muslim-majority Wayanad, suggests PM

Date: 1 April 2019

Category: Hate speech

At his campaign rally in Maharashtra's Wardha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a thinly veiled potshot at Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad, saying that some leaders have fled to a "minority-dominated" seat to escape "Hindu anger". PM Modi accused Congress of coming up with the phrase 'Hindu terror' and said the party had 'insulted' Hindus and their '5000-year-old culture'. “When you heard the phrase ‘Hindu terror’, did it hurt you deeply or not? In thousands of years of history, is there any instance of Hindus committing a terror act?” Modi asked the audience in his campaign speech. “They are now afraid of the majority and the punishment given by Hindu terrorists has forced them to take refuge in a place where the majority has become a minority,” Modi said in an apparent reference to Gandhi contesting the Wayanad seat.

BJP lists no Muslim candidate for Ahmedabad local elections

Date: 5 February 2021

Category: Discrimination

In its list for the upcoming elections to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the state BJP has not chosen any Muslim candidate. Hurt by the “neglect”, two party workers from the community registered their protest at the BJP office in Khanpur. “We have met our party leaders today to tell them that we are hurt. There are Muslim dominated areas such as Gomtipur, Jamalpur, Makatmpura and Danilimda… but no ticket to a Muslim candidate… We felt hurt… We have been working for the party for years. If not us, any other Muslim candidate should have been given the ticket,” said Farooq Saiyed, a 40-year-old party worker from Gomtipur ward of Ahmedabad, who runs a provision store. “This is communalism… It seems the party thought that the Muslim votes in these areas will be divided by candidates of parties such as Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and so, there is no need to give ticket to a Muslim,” he added.

#AntiHinduCAARiots trend on Twitter

Date: 7 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

Even as the Indian government was desperately trying to salvage its image as the Farmer’s Protest began to garner international attention, the hashtag #AntiHinduCAARiots was suddenly trending on Twitter, with a flood of anti-Muslim comments being posted under it. Many of the posts included claims that the violence in February 2020 was a planned attacked by “Islamist extremists”. The case of Dilber Negi, an Uttarakhand native whose charred body was found during the violence under suspicious circumstances, was repeatedly posted. It is not  clear what caused the sudden flood of posts under this hashtag, since no new development has happened concerning the violence. Many of the images posted under this hashtag had similar logos imposed on it, with the name ‘Prashasak Samithi’ written on it.

List of UP Congress' minority cell members viral with communal twist

Date: 6 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

A list of UP Congress’ district chairmen is viral on social media with a claim that it only consists of Muslim names. The image is doing the rounds on the internet with the caption “Congress be renamed as Indian Muslim League now....as conspiring to divide the nation again....” However, on fact checking, it was found that this was a list of the district chairmen appointed by the Congress in December 2020 for its MINORITY DEPARTMENT in Uttar Pradesh. Hence, the list has names only from the Muslim/minority community. The misleading post is doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter. The same photo with a Hindi caption was also viral last year in December.
