After former Indian cricket player Wasim Jaffer resigned from his position as the coach of Uttarakhand state cricket team citing extreme interference from the selection committee and the state cricket board, attempts were made to frame him as ‘communal’. Among other things, he was accused of trying to induct Muslim players into the  team, invite maulvis into the dressing room for prayer and stop the use of slogans like ‘Jai Sri Ram’ by the team. However, Jaffer and other members of the team have denied these allegations.

Cow vigilantes murder Muslim man, injure companion

Date: 20 July 2018

Category: Hate violence

On the night of July 20, 2018, 28-year-old Rakbar Khan and his friend Aslam Khan were brutally attacked by a mob in Lalwandi under the jurisdiction of Ramgarh police station in Alwar while they were transporting milch cows on foot to their home in Haryana’s Kolgaon from a village in Alwar. Aslam managed to escape but Rakbar was beaten brutally by the mob. He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. An FIR was registered under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. Four men – Paramjeet Singh, Dharmendra, Naresh and Vijay – were arrested and later chargesheeted. A Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Nawal Kishore Sharma – chief of the VHP’s gau rakshak cell in Alwar’s Ramgarh – was said to have led the mob. Then local Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja, who was later promoted to the rank of BJP’s vice-president in Rajasthan, is said to have been involved in the case. The family said that the integrity of the presiding officer of the court is suspicious. “Recording of prosecution evidence is still going on but we have come to know that the judgment is already being written. In such a situation, we have no hope for justice from ADJ 1 Sarita Swami,” states the application. On 9 February 2021, a court in Rajasthan’s Alwar rejected a plea for shifting the trial in the lynching. District sessions judge Sangeeta Sharma rejected the plea of Khan’s mother, Habiban, and Aslam, the survivor and witness to the lynching, saying she cannot interfere in the working of additional district Judge Sarita Swami, citing lack of jurisdiction. Habiban and Aslam said they have no hopes of getting justice as the accused were threatening them openly.

IAMC dismisses cheap attacks by Middle East Forum and its Hindutva allies

Date:  10 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

US-based advocacy group Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) issued an open letter, strongly condemning the continuous attacks on organisation and its coalition partners by the Islamophobic Middle East Forum (MEF) and its Hindutva allies. The latest letter comes on the heels of a defamatory article written by Benjamin Baird of MEF and published by The Sunday Guardian – a rightwing Indian publication founded by Bharatiya Janata Party leader MJ Akbar. The article peddles fallacies as fact and lies as truth in an attempt to discredit IAMC’s work on safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos. The MEF article makes many baseless allegations against IAMC, Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari, prominent activist Harsh Mander, Ladeeda Farzana, and Aysha Renna. MEF, which is run by the infamous anti-Muslim provocateur Daniel Pipes has been called out  US non-profit Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as having “spent the better part of three decades vilifying Muslims.”

Ab kya karu aise haramkhor bhai ka? Mohabbat karu?” “I love kashmir but hate kashmiri Hindu. Gross violation of human rights in Bhopal Jail: NHRC report

Date: 2 April 2018

Category: Discrimination

SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India) undertrials lodged in Bhopal Central Jail are facing systemic harassment, severe physical assault, mental torture, religious persecution, intimidation and denial of urgent medical treatment. They are being denied basic necessities such as food, water, warm clothes etc, finds an investigation conducted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Apart from inflicting severe physical torture, according to the reports, jail staff seems to “harbour religious antagonism to these prisoners, which is reflected in inhuman treatment”. Prisoners complain that they are forced to chant slogans that are against their religion and are beaten up if they refuse. Disrespect is shown to the Quran during cell searches. The allegation that their beards were forcibly cut also seems to be in line with the overall pattern of torture, beating and humiliation of these prisoners. Prisoners have also alleged that they are disturbed during namaz (prayer) and are not allowed to perform it collectively. Authorities also allegedly threw away their copies of the Quran, according to a report in The Indian Express. “According to norms, undertrial prisoners are entitled to two visits of 20 minutes every week. However, it was found that families are allowed only one visit of about 5 minutes every fortnight.  Prisoners are not allowed to speak freely to their visitors or inform them of jail conditions. Women visitors are harassed about their naqabs (veil),” say the findings.

Disruptors threaten interfaith couples with legal action during online conference

Datee: 13 February 2021

Category: Hate speech, harassment

A virtual press conference, “The Myth of Love Jihad”, organised by the non-profit organisation called Dhanak, was twice disrupted by people threatening interfaith couples, using expletives and warning them of “love-jihad” charges against the couples.  Dhanak is a Delhi based organisation mostly consisting of interfaith and intercaste couples. The first interruption was caused by a person threatening interfaith couples from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh with legal action. The second interruption was from a person who identifies as Mithila Thakur and issued death and rape threats. Co-founder of Dhanak, Asif Iqbal, was also warned and asked to stop these ka*** (a slur used for Muslim men). The disruptor also threatened that they’ve noted down the names of all these couples and all of them would soon be locked up in jails. A number of interfaith couples from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, attended the conference and spoke about their experiences. They spoke of the various challenges they had to overcome including family pressure, financial problems, fear of the new ordinances, of their marriage not being recognised as legal and how the law restricts the rights of women. Iqbal also spoke of how the complications with the Special Marriage Act force people to turn to a religious marriage and unfortunately the onus of conversion falls mostly on the woman. The couples also revealed that none of them wanted to convert but the challenges with the Special Marriage Act forced them to hurriedly have a religious ceremony or flee their state.

VHP claims man murdered for saying ‘jai sri Ram’, mother denies claim

Date: 13 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

After a 25-year-old man named Rinku Sharma was murdered in Delhi’s Mangolpuri area by five Muslim men following a birthday brawl, members of VHP and Bajrang Dal began claiming that he had been killed for collecting funds for the Ram Mandir and for greeting everyone with ‘Jai Sri Ram’. However, the boy’s mother denied that there was a communal angle to the murder. The five accused were known to the victim. “Only these people (the five accused) are at fault,” Radha Devi said of the murder, denying any link to Sharma’s participation in the fund-collection drive. “Many other Muslims live here, two other families live right next to our lane, we say Jai Shri Ram, they offer namaz, there has been no such problem before. They are very nice people,” Sharma’s mother said. Residents of the area also say there is no communal tension in the locality. The accused and the victim knew each other well, and even roamed around together, they claim. The police too have denied that there was a communal angle to the murder. However, the VHP has already started a campaign to portray the locality as an ‘Islamist hub’ with posters asking “why was he murdered for chanting Jai Sri Ram?” “Rinku worked hard for the Ram Mandir. The Muslims in the area didn’t like it, they hated the donation drive,” said VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal. “This is a crime against anyone who chants the name of Lord Ram and follows the Hindu dharma. Islamic jihadists have occupied the entire area.”

Video falsely circulated as Muslims beating up Hindu shopkeepers due to ‘fatwa’

Date: 30 May 2019

Category: Hate speech

A video showing a group of Muslims beating up other men inside a shop went viral on social media, with the claim “In MP’s Dewas, a fatwa was issued to Hindu shopkeepers to shut down their shops during Ramzan and any shop found open after Namaz, was being attacked”. The Quint found that the claim and the video were false on two counts. First, the video is not from Madhya Pradesh as claimed, but Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut. Second, the violence between the two groups took place over a personal dispute and not because the shop was open during Ramzan. According to Hindi daily Patrika, the incident took place on the night of 22 May in a shop named Devraj Collections in Bhagat Singh Market. A previous fight over a personal matter between Sachin, who works at the shop, and Samar, a youth from another community led to physical violence between the two. On Friday night, Samar returned with his brothers to beat up Sachin with iron rods. The attackers had absconded before the police arrived. The matter led to communal tensions after the video went viral on social media.

Nine months since the brutal and chilling communal violence in Delhi’s North-East district, fanatic Hindutva outfits allegedly continued to terrorise Muslim residents in some areas. Several Muslim residents of Khajuri Khas, one of the affected areas in the February violence, alleged that on November 14--Diwali night --a group of seven boys in the area gathered in lane no 29 in front of their local mosque and burst fire crackers, shouted communal slurs and threatened Muslims with dire consequences. Muslims in Bihar Village Stopped from Constructing Mosque

Date: 30 November 2020

Category: Discrimination

Members of the Hindu community have objected to the construction of a mosque in a village in Bargania Police limits of Sitamarhi district in Bihar, Muslim residents of the village said.Speaking with Clarion India, Mahmmood, a Muslim villager said the elders from the Hindu community held a meeting near the village temple in which some Muslims were also invited and they were asked to stop construction of the shrine. “They asked us that since there was no mosque here before, how have you started constructing it now?” Mahmood, who attended the meeting, said. The Hindu-majority village comprises nearly two dozen Muslim families who want to construct a place of worship where they can go to offer namaz and also send their children for religious education. They would go to a village 3 km away in Barahi village for namaz but had now decided to have their own mosque and for this they bought the land three years ago from a Hindu. The husband of the ward member of the village told Millat Times that Muslims should have started construction of the mosque after consulting everyone in the village. “Muslims are in the minority and Hindus are in the majority,” he said. “We do not oppose the mosque but such decisions should be taken after consultation.”

Muslim teenager shot dead by BSF Jawan in West Bengal

Date: 15 August 2020

Category: Hate violence

A nineteen-year-old youth Sahinur Haque, hailing from the Madhya Balabhut village in Coochbehar, along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, was allegedly shot to death by a BSF Battalion Commander on the night of 9 August. At around 7 pm, Sahinur left home with a fishing net in hand, to catch fish at the chaura (pond) close to his house. His two brothers accompanied him. The net was cast, and the trio sat and waited while they played games on their phones, with earphones plugged in. For unknown reasons, a team of patrolling BSF personnel fired pellets from a distance. One of the pellets got lodged in Sahinur’s right shoulder. Within the next few seconds, a gypsy van pulled up and BSF men of 62 Battalion, F Company came streaming out, along with their Commander Ballam Ram. They wrenched Sahinur free from his brothers’ arms, who jumped into the pond to save themselves. They began verbally abusing Sahinur in Hindi, and one of the officers pinned Sahinur down with a knee to his neck. Commander Ram quickly emptied two bullets from his service revolver into Sahinur’s chest and waist. By the time residents from nearby houses had gathered, alerted by the firing, Sahinur was already dead. Zia-Ul Sheikh, member of the local panchayat and one amongst the people who had gathered, told TwoCircles.net, “The BSF personnel began verbally abusing the womenfolk and threatened them with rape. They said they would fire into a couple more of us if we didn’t give away Sahinur’s body. It was the dead of the night, so we firmly refused to hand it over unless the DM or a politician assured us that the body would not be tossed away. Due to our number, the BSF was forced to leave.” However, the Tufanganj police registered the case as a General Diary Entry (no. 041) and not an FIR. The deceased’s uncle, Abdul Haque said, “We want answers, this matter has to be treated with seriousness. There is a constant fear of the BSF amongst us. They threaten us saying we are cow smugglers who will suffer terrible fates. We are scared to walk around freely at night. And now we have lost the life of our boy at their hands.” This claim is corroborated by Kirity Roy of MASUM. “The BSF has always disguised their killings behind the pretext of being attacked by cattle smugglers. How could Sahinur have been smuggling cows, sitting in a village 4 kms away from the border? They have no real provocation for their heinous actions.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked Congress over its 'Assam Bachao Yatra' and dared it to take a stand against illegal immigrant Muslims in the state. He also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi for expressing dissent against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and launching an anti-CAA campaign in Assam. Taking a jibe at 'Assam Bachao Yatra', Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "From whom do they want to save Assam? If they want to save Assam, then, let them take a stand against the immigrant Muslims and say that we will protect Assam's culture." He also claimed that Rahul Gandhi took advice from “Arabic speaking people”, apparently hinting at AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.

Fake news links scuffle in Bareilly to Tablighi Jamaat

In June 2020, ABP News anchor Rubika Liyaquat during the show ‘Seedha Sawal’’ claimed that the police action was sparked by miscreants who attacked cops in search of members of Tablighi Jamaat in Izzatnagar’s Karampur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. “The police had gone there to enforce quarantine, to save [people] from coronavirus and to search for Jamaatis. But stones were pelted at them,” she continued. Another mainstream media outlet that carried a similar report was TV Bharatvarsh. “Who are the ones crossing all limits? Is there even a treatment for them? How can uncivilized Jamaat be controlled because this is the community which has defamed Muslims in India,” said the concerned anchor. The channel subsequently played a video of policemen threatening locals to come out of their residences and face them. The cop with the loudspeaker can also be heard referring to an incident where two policemen were attacked. While this video is played, the ticker on TV screens reads — “The lockdown needs to end, uncivilized Jamaatis need to be controlled.” TV9 suggested that people associated with the Islamic organisation were behind the incident in Bareilly. Dainik Jagran claimed that cops had visited Bareilly’s Karampur Chaudhary area to search for Tablighi Jamaat members. However, locals thrashed the policemen and denied providing any details. The locals subsequently attacked cops and also tried to immolate the nearby police station, the channel claimed.None of the police statements from the local police claim that cops were patrolling the village in search of members of Tablighi Jamaat or the ones who attacked policemen were associated with the Islamic organisation. On April 7, Lallantop had published a fact-check article on the incident where the outlet spoke with local journalists who also debunked the false claims. However, even after a month, none of the mainstream media outlets, with viewership in lakhs, had taken down erroneous stories or provided clarification for the false reportage.
