Bajrang Dal equates Valentine’s Day to ‘Love Jihad’

Date: 16 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

The Hindu fringe group Bajrang Dal released posters stating how Valentine's Day "is against Indian culture". They also threatened to marry off any couple seen indulging in "any obscene activity in an open space". Bajrang Dal's poster also emphasized the need for a law on 'love jihad' in West Bengal. The notice read that if and when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government in West Bengal, they would urge the government to bring a law on 'love jihad'. Equating Valentine’s Day celebrations with 'love jihad', the fringe group suggested that the law be made in Bengal to "develop the character of young men and women".

Former BJP ally Jan Samhatii to contest assembly Bengal elections saying BJP appeasing Muslims

Date: 16 February 2021

Category: hate speech

AHindu outfit named Hindu Samhati announced that it will be contesting the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. The organisation formed its political wing called Jan Samiti, which would seek votes to save Bengali Hindus as it felt that the Bharatiya Janta Party had deviated from its agenda of saving Bengali Hindus in West Bengal. Hindu Samhati supported the BJP during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and campaigned in its favour on issues such as a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). It has now termed BJP's Bengal unit to be a 'Muslim appeasing' party which wants to gain power. Jan Samhiti claims it will contest 175 seats. "We are fighting for the rights of Bengali Hindus. We will fight against every party, including the BJP, as even BJP in Bengal is appeasing Muslims. They are giving organisational posts to the killers of BJP workers", said Rajat Roy, general secretary of Jan Samiti.

False claim circulated that demolition of Muslim houses revealed old temples

Date: 17 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project is an ambitious initiative of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, which aims to provide direct access to pilgrims between the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the ghats of river Ganga. Hundreds of houses are being demolished for the purpose, for which the government is reportedly providing compensation. Against the backdrop of at least 40 ancient temples rediscovered in the clearance, a video floating across social media channels was being shared with the claim that it depicts the demolition of 80 Muslim houses for the construction of the corridor. “45 old temples were discovered inside these houses,” asserts the narrative. The claim which is also viral on WhatsApp says, “Modi ji have started buying 80 Muslim households. When these houses were demolished, 45 ancient temples were found. The fact is when Aurangzeb converted the original Kashi Vishwanath temple into the Gyanvapi mosque, he allocated plots of lands to his soldiers who occupied temples and built their homes on these temples.” The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project is under the supervision of the Kashi Vishwanath Special Area Development Board. The corresponding website of the Board contains a list of the properties purchased for the purpose of demolition. All the people named are Hindus. Vishal Singh, CEO, Kashi Vishwanath Special Area Development Board, told Alt News that till now 250 houses have been demolished for the project. When asked if any of the razed homes belonged to members of the Muslim community, Singh said, “Not even a single house demolished was occupied by Muslims as the area is predominately Hindu.”

Muslim Bollywood star out of Hindu play

Date: 7 October 2016

Category: Discrimination

Far-right nationalists forced Bollywood star Nawazuddin Siddiqui to cancel his performance in a Hindu festival "because he is a Muslim". Some members of the Shiv Sena said they were against "a Muslim actor going on stage in a Ramlila", a theatre festival based on the Hindu religious epic Ramayana and performed across India. Siddiqui, who was performing the Ramlila in his village Budhana in northern Uttar Pradesh state, was forced to cancel his appearance minutes before going on stage, after the Shiv Sena told organisers that they did not want him to act. "In the 50-60 year history of the Budhana Ramlila, no Muslim artist has set foot on the stage. We couldn't allow that now. It's about tradition," Shiv Sena member Mukesh Sharma told The Times of India.

While campaigning for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections, Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, Nitin Patel stated that the govt is set to bring into force legislation to check 'Love Jihad' in the upcoming assembly session claiming that this law was necessary for ensuring the safety of the Hindu girls and women. Substantiating his claim, the minister was quoted saying, “Of what use are good roads, hospitals, and schools if our religion and country are not safe?” In a report by The Indian Express, Nitin Patel said that facilitating education for women and building schools, colleges is of no use if the basic safety of these women is at stake.

Tableau falsely portrayed as Kerala RSS workers being dragged through the streets

Date: 21 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

A short clip of a group of Muslims marching two men in RSS uniforms was circulating on social media with the claim that Popular Front of India (PFI) activists in Kerala's Muslim-majority Malappuram district chained and paraded Sangh workers publicly through the streets. Two men wearing colonial-era British uniforms also have their hands tied and are paraded by the group dressed in traditional Malabar Muslim attire and carrying PFI flags. The caption in Hindi with the video translates to, “PFI rally at Chelari in Kerala. Slogans of ‘la ilaha illallah’ are raised and some RSS workers tied with chains and ropes are paraded on the streets like animals. They are tied up and their procession is taken out in ISIS style. How was this PFI hate march allowed by the Kerala government?” India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found the claim along with the video to be misleading. The video is of a tableau march held as part of Popular Front Day 2021, and all the men seen in the video, including those in RSS uniforms, are PFI workers.

After announcing intention to join BJP, ‘Metro Man’ launches attack on ‘love jihad’

Date: 20 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

Technocrat E Sreedharan, popularly known as the Metro Man for his role in setting up the Delhi Metro, said he was opposed to the notion of “love jihad” because he had seen in Kerala that Hindu girls were tricked into marriage. His comments came a day after he announced that he was joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), months ahead of scheduled polls in the southern state. Responding to news channel NDTV on a question about “love jihad”, a term used by right-wing groups to describe relationships between Hindu women and Muslim men, Sreedharan said, “….Love Jihad, yes, I see what is happened in Kerala. How Hindus are being tricked in a marriage and how they suffer... not only Hindus, Muslim, the Christian girls are being tricked in a marriage. Now that sort of a thing I certainly will oppose.” “Personally, I am a very very strict vegetarian. I don’t even eat eggs so, certainly I don’t like anybody eating meat. That is certain…” he said, in response to a question on beef eating in Kerala and the BJP’s campaign against cow meat.

PFI member booked for asking people not to donate to Ram Mandir

Date: 20 February 2021

Category: Discrimination

Police in Karnataka's Mangaluru registered two cases against the organisers of a rally hours after Karnataka home minister Basavaraj Bommai slammed a Popular Front of India (PFI) leader for making "anti-national" comments there asking people not to donate money for the Ram temple construction in Ayodhya. PFI general secretary Anis Ahmed appealed to the people not to donate money for the temple at the rally. “This is not Ram Mandir. It is RSS Mandir. Not one penny of Muslims should be used for a single brick to build the RSS temple,” he said. "[He] has spoken against the country, against the nation, against the Constitution. It is an anti-national speech; hate speech, which tried to create division among people of this country. Especially, he has talked about [ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's ideological fountainhead] RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh], which is one of the most patriotic organisations in the country," Bommai said. A second PFI leader, who did not want to be named, said the police action came hours after the minister made the statement and is an attempt to harass anyone opposing the government. “What is the crime saying do not contribute towards the construction of a temple. Even they know it. That is why some vague charges have been slapped against us. We will take required legal measures as and when required."

Elderly Muslim cook caught in the middle of communal clash, beaten to death

Date: 20 February 2021

Category: Hate violence

A 60-year-old Muslim man died on the morning of February 20, 10 days after he was beaten up by a mob during communal clashes in Madhya Pradesh’s Akodia town of Shajapur district. The clashes had erupted on February 9 over a fight between two boys from two different communities. Firdaus Haji, a cook who was admitted to Shivala hospital at Bombay bazar in Akodia, succumbed to injuries, his nephew Ozun Pathan said.  Firdaus, a resident of Dabri Mohalla, was waylaid by an irate mob while returning from a marriage party where he had gone to cook. “The mob caught hold of him and thrashed him so badly that both his legs and arms were left bruised and fractured,” a local shopkeeper said. “They also hit his head with a sharp object.” According to locals, the communal clashes had started after a fight between two boys in which a Muslim boy reportedly hit a Hindu boy with a bat. This is said to have provoked the majority community. That evening 200 men from the community descended on a Muslim locality and clashed with its residents for several hours before police came in and brought the situation under control.

Picture morphed to claim AAP giving relief only to Muslim victims of Delhi violence

An alleged newspaper clipping was shared on social media with the claim that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was providing relief assistance to only Muslim victims of the Delhi violence of February 2020. The advert reads, “दँगा पीड़ितों की मदद हेतु (मुस्लिम)” which translated to – “For the help of riot victims (Muslims).” The claim had  been promoted by several profiles on social media last year. A keyword search on Facebook leads to a February 29, 2020, post by AAP’s Delhi unit which had shared a digital version of the same clipping. The word “Muslim” does not feature on this advert. A Facebook page ‘I Support Modi Ji’ and the BJP had also accused Kejriwal of releasing a ‘rate list’ for the dead. The picture attached to these posts also does not include the word ‘Muslim’.

Twitter users post Islamophobic comments after birth of Bollywood couple’s son

Date: 21 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

After the news of the birth of a second baby to celebrity Bollywood couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor was announced, multiple comments from right-wing profiles “guessing” the name of the child were posted on Twitter. The interfaith couple had drawn flak in 2016 for naming their firstborn son ‘Taimur’, which many right-wing trolls equated with a medieval king of the same name. The news organization News Nation asked whether the second child will be named ‘Aurangazeb or Tipu Sultan’, suggesting that the couple opted to go for historical Muslim figures that Hindutva forces deem to be “anti-Hindu”. Other “suggestions” from online trolls included Jinnah, Kasab and Babur.

'Love Jihad A Conspiracy To Make Kerala An Islamic State': UP CM

Date: 21 February 2021

Uttar Pradesh CM Adityanath alleged that the UDF government was sleeping on the 'conspiracy of making Kerala an Islamic state' in the guise of 'Love Jihad'.  Addressing BJP's poll campaign in Kasargod, he claimed that while the Kerala High Court had brought to attention 'Love Jihad' in 2009, the government paid no heed to it. Boasting his own state's Love Jihad law, he said that people in Kerala must wake up and vote for BJP.

Popular Front making concerted effort to form Malabar state: K Surendran

Date: 23 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

BJP state president K Surendran alleged that there was a planned attempt to form a Malabar state centered on Kozhikode. While pointing out that the leader of the Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (SKSSF) had recently put forward this demand, Surendran said that move poses a threat to Kerala as it was supported by the Muslim League. The decision to strengthen this agenda was taken at a meeting of the Popular Front in Bengaluru. Religious extremists are preparing to repeat what happened in Malappuram in 1921 all over Kerala, Surendran said. Kerala is on top of a volcano. He also alleged that “poor girls” were being taken to Syria through ‘love jihad’.

Fake messages claiming Himalaya founder funds terrorists viral on social media

Date: 23 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

A photograph of a man was shared on social media with the claim that he is “the owner of Himalaya Ayurvedic products, Mohammed Menal”. The man is being accused of donating 10% of his income to “jihadists”. Twitter user Bharat Sanghvi, who is followed by prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, had tweeted the photo with the accompanying claim in March 2020. A handle @Read_Bannaji wrote that Himalaya Drug Company should be avoided by all Hindus since its founder Mohammed Menal is a Muslim and Muslims donate 10% of their income to “terrorists”. A reverse-image search of the man’s photograph reveals that he is not the founder of Himalaya Drug Company. A 2016 article in The Economic Times identified him as Philipe Haydon, the CEO of the company. The founder of Himalaya Drug Company is not Mohammed Menal but Mohammad ‘Manal’. The company website states that ‘M Manal’ founded the company in 1930 in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. Manal passed away in 1986. Therefore, the claim that he has been giving away 10% of his income to “jihadists” does not hold water.

Rioters, police flash genitals at Muslim women, say ‘ye lo azadi’

Date: 3 March 2020

Category: Hate violence

Two separate groups of women from the riot-hit areas of north-east Delhi, one of which was present at the Chand Bagh protest and one which was present at the violence perpetrated at Shiv Vihar, told The Wire that members of a right-wing mob pulled down their pants, exposed their genitals to them and said, “Yeh lo azaadi.” (‘Here, take freedom.’). “I was standing at the Chand Bagh protest site when two members of our protest had been detained by the police. The women of the protest came out to confront the policemen and ask where they had been taken. A group of right-wingers came up to us, shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, and four men there pulled their pants down and pointed their genitals at us, and shouted ‘Yeh lo azaadi’,” says Asifa*, who did not want her name to be published for fear that she would be arrested. A report by the Delhi Minorities Commission pointed out that “Police used the chants of ‘Azadi' to sexually harass women and attack them, including at least one incident of a police officer flashing his genitals in front of women protestors. The verbal abuses were also sexual and communal in nature. It is clear that the police did not come forward to help and, in several instances, resorted to violence towards women,” the panel said.

Saffron flags planted outside Hindu homes during riots as markers

Date: 26 February 2020

Category: Hate violence

As riots ravaged parts of north-east Delhi , residents in and around Bhajanpura, Gautam Puri and parts of Maujpur painted saffron marks on their outer walls and main doors and put up saffron flags in balconies and rooftops to identify as Hindus. “Every Hindu house and shop here has a saffron marking as protection against the rioters. Though this is Hindu-dominated area, there are a few shops owned by Muslims. All of these have been burnt and damaged. People, including neighbours, are looting items from these shops,” a resident of Bhajanpura said on condition of anonymity. All the flags look alike, said a resident of Maujpur, suggesting that this could mean some level of organisation. “We are not sure if people have put up these flags on their own or if any group has put these up in the houses that they have identified. But all these flags look alike, with a similar pattern, colour and design,” said Prithvi Singh, a resident of Maujpur. Many residents of Bhajanpura and New Seelampur said that the groups that have been rioting in these areas were not locals, but brought in on trucks from outside only to instigate violence. Residents also said that they saw trucks with bricks and stones being unloaded near Yamuna Vihar main road.

‘Would redo what I did on February 23’, says riot instigator

Date: 23 February 2021

Category: Hate speech

Speaking at an event at the Constitution Club, BJP leader Kapil Mishra said that if he had to, he would “redo'' what he did on February 23 last year. “Aaj ek saal ho gaya hai, isliye yeh baat dobaara bolna chahata hoon… February 23 pichle saal jo kiya, agar zaroorat pade toh dobaara kar lunga (If the need arises to redo what I did on February 23, I would do it all over again),” he said, speaking alongside authors of a book, Delhi Riots: The Untold Story. “I have no regrets, besides the fact that we could not save Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma and constable Ratan Lal,” he added. Mishra had led a pro-CAA rally in Northeast Delhi last year and had warned police to clear anti-CAA protesters from the area, failing which they would take to the streets. In a video tweeted by him on February 23 last year, Mishra can be seen addressing a pro-CAA gathering near the Maujpur traffic signal and standing next to DCP (North East) Ved Prakash Surya when he issues the ultimatum. Riots broke out in the district the next day, claiming 53 lives. “It’s been a year since Jihadi forces engineered the riots in Delhi. Exactly the same pattern is being seen even now, like what happened on Republic Day. The so-called fringe elements are trying to sabotage peace in the Capital, aided and funded by anti-India forces, both within and outside the country. And the ‘pradarshan se danga tak (from protests to riots)’ model is very much evident,” he said.

Muslims produce more kids, want to turn India into an Islamic State: BJP MLA

Date: 24 February 2021

Category: HAte speech

Bihar BJP MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur triggered a controversy with his remarks on the fertility rate of Muslims. Elected to the Bisfi Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket in 2020, Hari Bhushan Thakur said the fertility rate in Muslims was higher than in Hindus. "Muslims want to convert India into an Islamic state," the Legislator went on to remark. Hari Bhushan Thakur made the comment in response to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's claim that the fertility rate in the state has declined tremendously. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had made the statement while delivering a Motion of Thanks to the Governor in the state Assembly. Hari Bhushan Thakur said Bihar had witnessed a decline in fertility rate but among Hindus and not Muslims. The BJP MLA from Bisfi also demanded a law to restrict population growth. "Law should be brought to control the population in the country. The resources in the country are very limited but some people want to increase the population and capture and turn India into an Islamic country," BJP MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur said. BJP MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur added, "Muslim community is indulging into this. It is important to control the population in order to make India into a developed country from a developing country." Asked about several Muslim leaders in the JD(U), MLA Hari Bhushan Thakur even slammed the BJP's ally in Bihar. He said, "Nation comes first and then comes religion but for some people, religion comes first and then the country. There is no feeling of patriotism in them."
