MP’s pro-tem speaker threatens Muslims on ‘love jihad’, rally violence

Date: 6 January 2021

Category: Hate speech

BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma, the pro tem Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh assembly who has openly admitted to have been part of the crowd that demolished Babri Masjid, has a knack for making incendiary comments. Sharma, who had earlier said that he wouldn’t allow Muslims to participate in the garba dance during Navaratri, recently tweeted that “total destruction awaits those who indulge in love jihad”. The tweet was posted after the MP cabinet cleared the new ordinance against unlawful conversion. After the CM Shivraj Chauhan called for a law against stone-pelting a few days ago, Sharma said: “Stone-pelters, listen, those who convert Sita to Rubiya, stop such activities, now daughters will be safe, religious processions will be taken out peacefully. If you attack them, your houses will be bulldozed and property impounded.” “When I returned to Bhopal (after the demolition of Babri Masjid), I told them (Muslims), don’t attack or we will respond,” he said, speaking to ThePrint. “Dhancha waha tuta hai aap yaha shanti rakho (The structure has been demolished there, you maintain peace here). You too will not be safe if you engage in arson and violence in retaliation (to the demolition),” he added.

Right wing group members wave saffron flag at Taj Mahal

Date: 5 January 2021

Category: Hate violence

Four activists from a Hindu rightwing outfit were arrested for waving saffron flags within the premises of the Taj Mahal in Agra after a video showing the same went viral on social media. According to the Times of India, the men were identified as members of Hindu Jagran Manch’s youth wing – Guarav Talwar, Rishi Lavania, Sonu Baghel and Vishesh Kumar. On October 25, 2020, activists from the same organisation had entered the premises and sprinkled gangajal (water from the Ganga, considered holy) to “purify” the Taj Mahal. They even peddled a Hindutva claim that has been intermittently aired for a while now: that the Taj Mahal is not a mausoleum but a temple of Shiva. In November 2018, a group of women from Rashtriya Bajrang Dal reportedly performed aarti and sprinkled gangajal around the Taj Mahal to protest the offering of prayers by Muslims on a weekday. In 2017, BJP leader Vinay Katiyar had claimed that the 17th century monument was constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan by destroying a Hindu temple. In August 17, 2017, the Archaeological Survey of India told the Agra court that the Taj Mahal had never been a temple and was always a Muslim tomb.

Hindutva groups target interfaith couples through deep network: Report

Date: 5 January 2021

Category: Hate violence

A report by the news portal The Print has brought out the vast network of “moles” that work to catch and separate interfaith couples, specifically couples involving a Muslim man and Hindu woman. Moles allegedly inside courts, notary offices and the police department, monthly briefings and dedicated WhatsApp groups for quick dispensation of information and action- this is how some of the Hindu outfits and vigilante groups are working to keep “a check and prevent Hindu-Muslim” marriages across Uttar Pradesh. Whether it is the Hindu Jagran Manch, Yogi Adityanath’s Hindu Yuva Vahini, the Rashtriya Yuva Vahini or the traditional Hindutva outfits such as the RSS, VHP and the Bajrang Dal, each of them claim to have a network of people at the block, zila and village levels to keep a “strict watch”. They say they intervene as soon as they see Hindu-Muslim couples venture out, let alone approach court to register marriages.  The groups admit to being emboldened by the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, which came into force on 28 November. In at least four of the eight cases that ThePrint reviewed, the FIR was filed at the insistence of these groups. “We feel empowered. The police too is now responding quickly and acting swiftly on our complaints because now it is a direct order from the CM’s office,”  Jitendra Bains, a Hindu Jagran Manch leader from Bijnor told ThePrint. Their goal, Bains says, is “to save Hindu women from Muslim men”. “Hamare jasus har jagah hai, kyuki woh hindutva ki raksha karta hai,” Bains laughs. Rajesh Awasthy, zila mantri of the VHP in Shahjahanpur, claims that as soon as his organisation finds out about any such couple, he makes sure that the woman is “picked up” and married off to a Hindu within two days. The Muslim man, he adds, is “thrashed and warned”. “Ismain ladki ki marzi nahi hoti. Hum zabardasti karte hai. Ladki ki sehmati ki koi zarurat bhi nai hai, sirf uske pariwar ki sehmati honi chahiye. (This wedding happens without the woman’s consent. We force it. The woman’s consent is anyway not important. Her family should be on board),” he says.

Tension prevailed at Nagla Mulla village in Firozabad after a Muslim family, one of whose men is facing charges under the anti-conversion law, was chased even as the 19-year-old woman involved in the case gave a testimony countering the allegations. In a statement on 7 January before a magistrate, the woman said she had left home with the Muslim youth, 23, of her own free will, had married him in court and not converted. The police said several people from the woman’s village, the neighbouring Jamalpur, gathered outside the house of the accused and chased his family members on 6 January. The police said they acted before any violence broke out and forces were deployed in both the villages. The woman had left home with the youth on December 22, and on December 26, a case under the anti-conversion law and of kidnapping was lodged against him. On 4 January, the woman was traced and brought back to her family; the police were looking for the 23-year-old.

Sufi practice wrongly portrayed as Muslims sneezing enmasse to spread coronavirus

Date: 1 April 2020

Category: Hate speech

A video went massively viral on social media with the claim that people mass sneezed in Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin mosque to spread coronavirus infection. A Facebook post by one Anita Saxena on the subject drew at least 24,000 views and 1,700 shares. However, a factcheck by the website AltNews revealed that it was actually a video of the Sufi practice of ‘zikr’, a practice where devotees remember God in unison. The participants were not sneezing, but taking the name of Allah. Moreover, the incident did not take place at Nizamuddin, and happened before the first case of coronavirus was reported in India.

Viral audio claims Muslims vendors deliberately trying to spread coronavirus in Surat

Date: 7 April 2020

Category: Hate speech

A 6:24 minute audio clip was circulated on messaging applications such as WhatsApp, in which a man who introduces himself as a resident of City Light area of Surat, Gujarat warns citizens about the ‘unprecedented’ presence of Muslim hawkers in their area. He claims that while he was taking his morning walk he saw at least 15-16 three-wheeler tempos with Muslim boys selling vegetables and fruits. For instance, he says that he saw one person selling onions at prices lower than the market rates and questioned their motive for doing so. He then refers to a video of a fruit seller who was licking his fingers and touching fruits (news later debunked by fact-checking websites). “Somewhere there is a doubt arising,” he keeps reiterating and informs that he wants to caution his “Hindu brothers” as this is his duty as a Hindu. “If we Hindus don’t come together that there will be a big problem ahead. It’s possible that they [Muslims] are running their Jihad by doing this,” he says and concludes the message by asking the Hindu community to boycott Muslim vendors and not buy eatables from them for at least a month or so. However,  a senior official with DCB said that whatever was being said in the clip was untrue. Mukesh Ostval, a 49-year-old resident of Surya Complex on City Light road, was arrested by the DCB Surat city on April 6, 2019 for spreading misinformation. According to a Times of India report, Ostval is a native of Bhintagam of Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district. On April 4, The Indian Express reported that seven people from different parts of Gujarat had been arrested by the police for sharing the message which called for the social and economic boycott of the minority community.

Young woman who had just given birth dies after forced eviction

Date: 25 March 2019

Category: Hate violence

A 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at a hospital after she was forcibly evicted from her house by police and paramilitary forces hours after she had given birth in Hojai, Assam. After battling for life for five days at a hospital in Guwahati, Kulsuma Begum succumbed to her injuries on March 11. Her mother-in-law alleged police and paramilitary forces barged into her house to physically remove Kulsuma – who had given birth to a baby boy just two hours ago – during an eviction drive at Sarkebasti village in central Assam’s Hojai district, about 150km east of Guwahati. Authorities in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) forcibly evicted more than 600 Muslim families from their land in Hojai, saying the families, including Kulsuma’s, had encroached upon government land. “Seven to eight policemen entered the house and started ransacking it. I could take some stuff out. When I came back I saw Kulsuma was lying on the floor and couldn’t move,” Ramisa Khatun told Al Jazeera. “I took up the baby as I feared they might kill him,” said Ramisa, 50. As Kulsuma was being ushered out of the house she collapsed, said Ramisa. Following public outrage, a formal police complaint (First Information Report) was filed against several KAAC officials as well as a local police officer. Under the BJP government in Assam, which came to power in 2016 on an anti-immigrant plank, eviction drives have escalated. In February 2017, the government informed the Assam assembly that about 3,481 families were evicted from 13 districts. While most of them were Muslims, they also included other marginalised social groups such as the tribal people. However, government records reveal hundreds of people were evicted from the lands they officially owned.

More than 400 Muslim houses razed in Assam’s Sonitpur district

Date: 10 January 2020

Category: Hate violence

As many as 450 houses were razed and over 3,000 people were evicted in Sootea in Assam’s Sonitpur district on 5-6 December 2019 after “a local legislator entered 10 villages in the area with bulldozers and paramilitary personnel,” Arab News reported. A press release issued by Jamaat-e-Islami-Hind (JIH) on 26 December 2019 claimed that 426 Muslim families were evicted because “they belonged to the minority community and did not vote for BJP MLA Padma Hazarika.” District Commissioner Manvinder Pratap Singh told The Quint that as many as 426 families were evicted because the families had encroached upon government land. People who have been evicted claim that Hazarika did so because they are not voters of that area. A villager named Ali told Arab News, “The government says we are encroachers and Bangladeshis, and they evicted us from our own land despite having all the documents. The larger goal, I feel, is that the BJP wants to settle down Hindu Bengalis in this area who will act as a permanent vote bank for the party.”

Eviction drive by BJP MLA results in clashes

Date: 9 August 2020

Category: Hate violence

Protests by local Muslim communities of Jamugurihat in Sonitpur district of Assam against forced eviction turned into a violent clash between locals and BJP MLA of Sootea constituency, Padma Hazarika’s men. As per the locals, the BJA MLA’s men were trying to intimidate the locals into evicting them. When the locals raised questions about their rehabilitation and compensation, one of the men slapped a local. When Hazarika arrived at the spot with the police, he was carrying a gun, threatened people and reportedly assaulted a local woman. The police arrested two local boys. The assaulted woman registered an FIR against Hazarika. Locals accused BJP MLA’s men of plundering the livestock of the residents and fleeing. Chokighat and Jamugurihat are two among eleven villages along the Jiabhorali river, which flows through the Sonitpur district. Over the past 20 to 30 years, people of Nagaon, Rangapara, Tezpur, and other areas have settled in these chars (riverine islands) as their erstwhile lands were eroded by the river, and they became homeless. Some of the land was owned by the government and some belonged to landowners. The displaced people bought the land with whatever assets they had managed to save. For the past year, ongoing construction of a four-lane highway through this area has raised the estimated value of the land to about 1 crore rupees. Eyeing this prospect for profit-making, Padma Hazarika has been forcibly evicting people who live within a 600-metre stretch of land next to the highway. Kazi Alam, a long-time resident of Bihagaon, told TwoCircles.net that, “Houses in Gotaimari and Balipukhuri have broken down. A mosque has also been torn down by Hazarika’s men in Gotaimari. I have lived here since 1917, even my grandfather and father were born here. We have our documents, pay our taxes and bills. How are we suddenly illegal Bangladeshis? The previous governments have made schools and roads for us, given us electricity. What will we do if we are displaced?”

False news about Muslims refusing Covid-19 testing circulated

Date: 10 April 2020

Category: Hate speech

In the backdrop of global COVID-19 outbreak, Kannada channel Public TV aired a show on March 14 where it claimed that four Muslim youths in Sultan Street, Bhatkal in Karnataka refused coronavirus testing for “religious reasons” after returning from Dubai. The anchor said, “Won’t get coronavirus test done. In our religion, there is no scope for the test…This is what four youths who returned from Dubai have said – that they won’t be getting (coronavirus) test done. They have come to Bhatkal, the four youths. When they were asked to get coronavirus test done because they had come from abroad, they said in our religion there is no scope for the test.” Right-wing website OpIndia picked up the news the next day and tweeted, “Islam does not approve: Four Muslims who returned from Dubai threaten health officials in Karnataka, refuse to undergo Coronavirus test.” Another right-wing website My Nation also reported the alleged incident based on Public TV’s broadcast. The claim was shared sans any source by Mahesh Hegde, founder of fake news blog Postcard News. Kanchan Gupta quote-tweeted a tweet which shared the Public TV broadcast and termed the alleged action of the youths “minorytism”. However, in a joint press conference, Bhatkal Deputy Superintendent (DySP) and Assistant Commissioner (AC) Bhatkal stated that there were no novel coronavirus cases in Bhatkal and that rumour mongers will be dealt with seriously. In addition, Uttara Kannada District Magistrate (DC) Dr Harish Kumar K told Alt News that no incident was reported in his district where four men returning from Dubai refused testing for religious reasons. He said the process of testing individuals returning from foreign countries was going on smoothly with full cooperation from all.

Kannada publication attempts to give communal color to coronavirus outbreak

Date: 2 April 2020

Category: Hate speech

Kannada newspaper Vijay Karnataka’s frontpage report on coronavirus outbreak in the state, where it pins the fault entirely on the Muslim community, drew widespread criticism from many sections of the public. The report was titled ““All the dead from corona are from the same community”. At the time, the state had reported 76 positive cases, with three deaths. Although the dead were indeed all Muslim, the daily used this fact to give the impression that the Muslims were primarily responsible for 76 people contracting the virus in Karnataka. The report went on to falsely claim that the Muslims continued to flock mosques despite the lockdown, making the rest of the society fearful: “Hindus and Christians supported the government, and stopped visiting temples and churches in the last 10 days. Only a certain section of people still gathers on the pretext of praying. They are not following the curfew rules and are roaming the streets, which has got civil society worried.” To back up its accusations, the newspaper selectively cited a couple of incidents involving Muslims. In the first incident, a Bangalore man named Mujib Mohammed was arrested for posting a tweet saying people should spit in a crowd to spread the virus. In the second, three persons praying in a mosque were arrested by the police.
