Muslim student in Madhya Pradesh arrested for calling RSS men 'pigs' on Facebook

Date: 23 July 2020

Category: Hate violence

At the height of the media hysteria over the emergence of coronavirus infections at the Nizamuddin centre of the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi, the wrestler-turned-BJP politician Babita Phogat took to Twitter to call the Jamaatis ‘ignorant pigs’ (jaahil suar). But when a young Muslim man in Jabalpur used the same term – suar – for the dozen or so activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh who had contracted COVID-19 at the RSS office in the city, he ended up in jail with the police slapping serious charges of promoting religious hatred on him. On July 20, the Jabalpur police booked  Ziya-ul-Haq –  a 23-year-old resident of Mansurabad Gohalpur of Jabalpur district and final year student of B. Pharm. at the Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya – under section 295 (A) (‘Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs’) and 505 (‘Statements conducing to public mischief’) of the Indian Penal Code and immediately arrested him. The complainant in the FIR alleged that Haq made “indecent”, “shameful”, and “intolerable” statements against RSS members. He went on to emphasise that such statements against a “nationalist organisation” by a “Muslim youth” can jeopardise social harmony. “The RSS is a patriotic and social work organisation, and has crores of members in this country. The Muslim man’s indecent reference to such an organisation can endanger social harmony. The abusive reference made by the man has hurt my feelings of  nationalist and social service,” the complainant said in the FIR.  He warned the police to take immediate legal action against the “Muslim youth” and arrest him, failing which, he said, “an angry protest movement will be organised”. Justifying the police action, however, Sanjeev Uikey, ASP, Jabalpur said, “Indeed the RSS is not a religious institution but if a Muslim youth calls the RSS and its workers ‘suar‘ and it offends them and they demand action, the police have to book the youth for insulting religious beliefs. Now, the matter is before the court.”

Incident of family feud in Hyderabad given a false communal angle

Date: 9 July 2020

Category: Hate speech

A video which shows a gravely injured man lying on the floor is being shared on various social media platforms with a false communal claim – that a Hindu youth was murdered in broad daylight by Muslims in the “name of secularism.” However, it was found that it was a case of family dispute and both the victim and the accused belong to the same community. The video was from 5 June, when Mohammad Imran Khan was murdered by his relatives Mohammad Mehtab Khan, Mohammad Taleb Khan, Mohammad Arbaz Khan, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Ghouse Khan. The video, which was massively shared on Twitter and Facebook, is being shared along with a claim which identifies the victim as a ‘Hindu youth’. The claim reads: “In an example of Hindu-Muslim unity, Muslim men in Andhra Pradesh murdered a Hindu youth by stabbing him to death with a knife in broad daylight.” The same video was also shared with a separate claim, which states that the incident took place in Guwahati. Reverse image searches as well as police  statements revealed the original identities of the parties involved.

Morphed image used against Muslim community

Date: 14 MArch 2019

Category: Hate speech

A photograph of a Muslim woman holding a placard that reads, “Shia and Sunni could never become brothers within the Muslim community and some foolish Hindus say Muslims and Hindus are brothers.” Twitter user @arpitahindu was among those who circulated the image. The same picture was also widespread in 2019 however the placard read differently — “If Modi wanted to fill his own pockets, he would have done that during his 13 years term as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He loves his country and not his position. (Modi को अपना घर भरना होता तो वह 13 साल गुजरात का CM रह कर भर लेता| उसे कुर्सी से नहीं, सिर्फ अपने देश से प्रेम है).” The undertone of the message attempted to portray that a Muslim woman was vouching for PM Modi. A Google reverse image search revealed that the text written on the placard was photoshopped with a message in support of PM Modi, and then against the Muslim community. In the original image, the text read, “I’m a Muslim but I’m not Arab.” According to a blog post, the above image was part of a campaign organised by the Islamic students’ association of the University of Mary Washington, USA against stereotyping and racial judgement. It was also debunked by AFP Fact Check.

Date: 15 May 2020

Citing the Home Ministry’s lockdown restrictions, the district administrations of Ghazipur, Hathras, Farrukabad imposed a blanket ban on azan (Islamic call to prayer) from mosques. After several petitions were filed, the Allahabad high court lifted the ban, stating that reciting azan using human voice cannot be prohibited. However, it added that mosques would require special permission from the district administration to use loudspeakers for the azan.

Category: Hate speech

On January 13, Kerala cricketer Mohammed Azharuddeen smashed a century off just 37 balls against Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament. The knock made Azharuddeen an overnight sensation, with prominent personalities such as former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and commentator Harsha Bhogle appreciating the 26-year-old’s efforts. Meanwhile, an apparent screenshot of a news headline saying “Kerala born Muslim boy blasts Mumbai” went viral. The screenshot of news portal “The News Minute” has Azharuddeen’s picture below the headline. Netizens lashed out saying the headline was an example of Islamophobia. However, India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the screenshot was morphed. The actual article was published by “The News Minute” with the headline “Kerala opener Azharuddeen who scored century in 37 balls wins hearts”. Editor-in-chief of “The News Minute”, Dhanya Rajendran, has also clarified on Twitter that the screenshot is fake. She wrote, “Extremely disappointed with people who made a fake screenshot, even more disappointed with journalists here spreading it. This was our original headline. If nothing else, have some trust that we would not have such a headline”.

Minority commission has become “Muslim Commission”, says Catholic Church mouthpiece

Date: 17 January 2021

Category: Hate Speech

The minorities welfare commission in Kerala has turned into ‘Muslim Welfare Commission’ under CPI(M) minister K T Jaleel, wrote Deepika, the mouthpiece of the Kerala Catholic Church. Pointing out that many of the senior members of the department were Muslim, the editorial piece criticized their perceived “silence” from other communities on this issue and alleged that a person like K T Jaleel, with “SIMI links”, was making communal decisions. It alleged that he was being overly partial towards madrasas, while ignoring other religious centres (A letter claiming that the Kerala government was spending lavishly on madrasas had recently gone viral, but was later debunked as fake). The editorial also cited the allegation of “Islamophobia” as a tool to silence those who criticise “atrocities against other minorities” and portray those who speak out as “communalists”.

Viral letter falsely claim that state government spends lavishly on Madrasa salaries

Date: 16 January 2021

Category: Hate speech

Posts claiming that Kerala government is spending too much on Madrasas went viral on social media. According to the post, the spending data was presented by the Minister of Higher Education of Kerala, KT Jaleel, in the State Assembly. Many right-wingers shared the posts to put Kerala government in a bad light to portray it as a pro-Muslim and Hinduphobic government. Many people, including Tathagata Roy, Former Governor of Tripura, posted the same claim in the form of  a Twitter thread. However, salaries of Madrasa teachers in Kerala are not paid by the State government but by the respective Madrasa committees. The Quint quoted KT Jaleel's office, who said, "The respective madrasa committees pay the salaries of madrasa teachers. They are paid according to the financial capacity of the madrasa committees." Dr Moideen Kutty AB, Director of Directorate of Minority Welfare, rubbished the viral post's claim,  and explained that there were only 411 retired madrasa teachers and none are getting more than Rs 1,200. Hence, the viral claim was found to be fake on many accounts. KT Jamil had not presented any data in the State Assembly as claimed by the viral post.

MLA exaggerates Muslim presence in government departments

Date: 30 October 2020

Category: Hate speech

Kerala MLA P C George, while speaking at a function organized by Syro-Malabar church in Kottayam, claimed that seven of the 14 collectors in Kerala belonged to “one community”, while the Higher Education Department too was staffed largely by people from a single community. The Higher Education Department is under minister K T Jaleel, who has often been the target of hate speech due to his Muslim identity. Mr George’s claims about Muslim representation were found to be false. At the time of his speech, just four district collectors in Kerala were Muslim, while a majority of senior staff  members in the Higher Education Department were from non-Muslim communities. Out of 13 state universities, just one University Vice Chancellor under the department belong to the Muslim community. After his speech kicked up a controversy, Mr George claimed that his speech had been edited and that he had actually been praising the Muslim community’s hard work. Mr George had come under fire in June 2019 after a leaked telephone conversation revealed him saying that “he did not need votes of Muslims because they sing praises about terrorists”.

BJP uses bishops' logo against Muslims, apologizes

Date: 18 January 2021

Category: Hate speech

Leaders of the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala apologized to the southern state's bishops' council after some party members misused the council's logo to post an anti-Muslim message on social media. The BJP's Kottayam district president Noble Mathew published a poster on social media using the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) logo. The Malayalam-language poster said Catholics could not be used as a ladder for caliphate rule. The poster went viral and many Christians shared it on social media until church leaders took note and issued a clarification disassociating the council from the post. The poster featured the face of a prominent Muslim leader who is also a member of parliament from Kerala. The Church's clarification said its officials had nothing to do with the post and the Church was not against Muslims. It said the poster was an attempt to create communal discord between Christians and Muslims. The BJP's state-level leader Jiji Joseph called on Father Jacob Palackappilly, deputy secretary of bishops' council, and tendered an "unconditional apology for the poster that created confusion and distrust among Christians," the priest said.

Christian groups’ name used in hate campaign against azan

Date: 16 January 2021

Category: Hate speech

A complaint has been registered by the Kerala Council of Churches over the use of church names to circulate posters demanding a ban on azan through loudspeakers. The church alleged that its name had been used without permission and that it was a deliberate campaign to create communal divide. The poster alleged that azan renditions through loudspeakers offended people of other religions and created noise pollution and asked the Central Government to ban the custom. It also claimed that if the Central government did not act, the groups would approach the Supreme Court. An investigation was initiated based on the complaint.

Muslim shrine vandalised and painted with saffron colour in UP’s Kanpur

Date: 20 January 2021

Category: Hate violence

Kanpur Police of Uttar Pradesh registered two FIRs against 40-50 unknown persons after a Muslim shrine was defiled and vandalised. The shrine has a mosque and a grave. The incident happened at Ramdham Chouraha of the Bithoor area in Kanpur on January 17. The mosque is reported to have been painted with saffron colour. But the SHO of Bithoor police station, Kushalendra Pratap Singh denied this. He said only the outer wall of the grave had been painted with saffron. But other sources contradict the SHO. News18 Urdu reported that the mosque has been painted with saffron colour. The Qazi of Kanpur city, Qari Abdul Quddos, also said the targeted structure is a mosque. He alleged that the culprits are associated with extremist right-wing organisations. “For the last three days, the miscreants belonging to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal were causing mischief. Complaints were lodged with the Bithoor police station. But no action was taken. Had the police acted upon, the mosque would have been saved,” said the Qazi. They also vandalized the structure and wrote ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on its wall, he told local reporters. Qari Abdul Quddos said when he came to know about this he informed the DIG. The police came into action only after this. But by the time they reached the spot it was too late, he said.
