Christian youth group resists attempt to spread Islamophobia through Clubhouse

Date: 9 June 2021

The Kerala Catholic Youth Movement put out a statement against accounts on Facebook and the audio sharing app Clubhouse that were spreading severely Islamophobic content in its name. The KCYM statement also suggested that certain organizations were attempting to spread communal hatred to fuel their own political agendas through these social media platforms. The statement also listed the atrocities being carried out against Christians by Sangh Parivar in several parts of the country and questioned why these accounts only focused on Muslims.

UP police plant illegal firearm in Gulzar’s shop to frame him in fake case

Date: 11 June 2021

A police team was caught on camera keeping illegal weapons in Gulzar Ahmed shop in Badalgarh village of Uttar Pradesh Amethi district. An unsuccessful attempt was apparently being made by the police to criminalise a person named Ahmed by planting illegal weapons at his shop. Ahmed said the police carried out the act in order to frame him in a fake case. The CCTV footage of police personnel belonging to Bazar Shukul police station keeping illegal firearms in the shop later surfaced online. The hardware shop belonged to Gulzar Ahmed, a resident of Badal Garh village in Amethi district. The businessman said that on March 16, SHO Vishwanath Yadav had come with his team when the shop was about to close and said the shop had to be checked. A complaint had been received that illegal work was being carried out in the shop. Even though Ahmed denied the allegation, he kept the shop open for the police to carry out an inspection. When a police officer claimed that the firearm had been found, the shopkeepers responded that they had cameras installed in the premises. They reportedly left the shop immediately. Ahmed also said that there had been pressure to destroy the tapes.

Assam CM asks Muslims to carry out ‘family planning’

Date: 12 June 2021

On completing 30 days of his government in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, 10 June, asked the Muslim community in the state to adopt measures for “family planning”. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said, “We want to work with the minority Muslim community to control the population. The root cause of issues, such as poverty and land encroachment, lie in uncontrolled population growth. I think we can put an end to a lot of social problems in Assam if the Muslim community adopts better family planning measures.” He also added that his government will educate Muslim women to understand population control. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s counsel to the Muslim community (read Bengali-speaking Muslims) of the state to practice “decent family planning norms” drew flak with several organizations and individuals asking the government to take necessary steps in this regard instead of blaming the community. One of them even pointed out that the CM himself had six siblings.

Meat seller killed during raid by cops

Date: 31 May 2021

Bulandshahr police have initiated a probe into the death of a meat seller that allegedly occurred during a police raid. According to the family of 43-year-old Aqil Qureshi, he was allegedly pushed off the terrace on the night of May 23 as a police team came to nab him. Police denied the allegations, saying that Qureshi succumbed to injuries which he sustained during a jump. “On the intervening night of May 23 and 24, a police team from Khurja Nagar Police Station had gone to investigate Aqil Qureshi who was wanted in several cases. The police went to his house and the family members told them that he was not there. The police team returned. We were later told he had been admitted to a hospital due to some injury which prima facie appears to be one he sustained from jumping in order to escape. A probe has been ordered under SP Rural,” said Circle Officer (Khurja) Suresh Kumar.

Facebook Banned a Hindu Extremist Group But Left Most of Its Pages Online for Months

Date: 9 June 2021

Facebook allowed a Hindu extremist group to operate openly on its platform for months, even after the company banned the group’s main pages for violating its policies. It was not until TIME pointed out a network of more than 30 pages linked to the Sanatan Sanstha—with more than 2.7 million total followers—that the social media giant followed through and purged them in April. The pages regularly shared hate speech and misinformation, largely targeting India’s Muslim minority, including Islamophobic depictions of Muslims as green monsters with long fingernails.

UP man shot dead over cow smuggling

Date: 11 June 2021

A week after a 55-year-old man, Sher Khan, was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Tumaula village in a suspected case of cow smuggling, Mathura district police were yet to identify any suspect in the case. The deceased’s family, however, said it was a “well known gau rakshak in the area” who killed Sher Khan, a cattle trader. Mathura police has lodged two counter-FIRs in the case — one for the murder and the other for alleged cow smuggling — but while Sher Khan was an accused in the second FIR, the one for his murder did not name anyone. Speaking to ThePrint, Sher Khan’s family accused one Baba Chandrashekhar of getting him killed, but the police said his son’s complaint, on the basis of which the FIR was registered, did not identify any suspect. Denying the police version, Sher Khan’s wife Sitara told ThePrint that the family wanted to name Chandrashekhar in the FIR but the police at Kosi Kalan station, where the complaint was lodged, refused to mention him. “They refused to use Baba’s name in the FIR… Instead, they simply lodged the complaint against unidentified persons,” she alleged.

Karnataka govt shelves Covid relief to Muslim clerics after VHP’s opposition

Date: 10 June 2021

The Karnataka government put on hold its decision to pay Covid lockdown relief to imams and muezzins of mosques in the state from the funds of the Hindu religious endowment department. The move comes after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Dakshina Kannada district opposed the decision. Recently, the BS Yediyurappa-led government announced a relief package of Rs 3,000 each to imams and muezzins along with the temple priests serving in the ‘C’ category of temples under the Muzrai (Hindu religious endowment department) department. In a memorandum submitted to state Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary Wednesday, the VHP welcomed the move of announcing a relief package to temple priests but opposed the package to imams. “VHP welcomes the decision of the government to provide compensation to temple priests who are affected by the Covid lockdown. However, VHP opposes the decision of the government to provide Covid relief to the imams of 41 mosques and madrasas of the district from the funds of the Hindu Religious Endowment. The money received from Hindu temples should be utilised for the temples and the welfare of the Hindu community,” the letter stated.

Allahabad HC points out falsity in ‘love jihad’ claim against Muslim man

Date: 12 June 2021

The Allahabad High Court granted bail to a Muslim man accused of forcefully converting a Hindu woman to his faith. The two adults had been living together for four years without any objection and resistance from the woman. Pointing out that the FIR against the Muslim man had been lodged in March 2021 under the “Love Jihad” Ordinance even though it had come into force on November 21, 2020, Justice Rahul Chaturvedi of the Allahabad High Court said, “It is but obvious that the applicant/accused and the victim were in a relationship for last four years when there was no ordinance and also there was no objection or resistance from the side of the victim. All of a sudden, after this Ordinance came into existence, she became aware of her rights.” The woman and the accused had been in a physical relationship for the last four years. The FIR alleged that the accused Munna Khan had taken certain “obscene” photographs and videos of her and used them to blackmail her to maintain a physical relationship with him. However, there was no recovery of any obscene still photographs or video by the police during the investigation.

Opindia article describes anti-Hindutva stand as ‘wokeism’ that ruins friendships

Date: 9 June 2021

An Opindia article, titled “How to lose a friend to ‘wokeism’ in 5 ways”, describes a stand against Hindutva agendas, mostly targeting Muslims, as a form of baseless “wokeism”. It imagines (poorly reasoned) conversations between friends on issues such as CAA, the forced chanting of ‘jai sree ram’ and Mughal legacy.
