BJP Youth Leader Admits Burning Rohingya Camp

Date: 19 April 2018

A criminal complaint was filed against BJP youth wing leader Manish Chandela for allegedly admitting on social media to burning down a Rohingya refugee camp in the national capital. The Delhi police handed over the complaint by senior advocate Prashant Bhushan against BJP youth-wing leader Manish Chandela alleging that he had “set fire” to the Rohingya refugee camp in Delhi to its cyber crime cell. On April 15, a camp in south Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar was burnt to ashes, rendering over 200 homeless. In his complaint to the Delhi police, Bhushan had on April 19 sought registration of a first information report against Chandela, member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, on the grounds that he had “admitted his criminality in having set fire to the Rohingya camp in Delhi, had threatened in another tweet to “do it again” and that his tweets were “intended to incite communal hatred and create a disturbance to public peace and tranquillity.”

Delhi school segregating Hindu, Muslim students: Report

Date: 10 October 2018

The HRD Ministry asked for a report over allegations that Hindu and Muslim students were allegedly being segregated into different sections at an NDMC school, even as the Delhi government ordered a probe into the matter. According to a media report, a section of teachers employed by the NDMC alleged that a primary school in Wazirabad was segregating Hindu and Muslim students in different sections. "The matter is very serious. It may damage the social fabric of the country. I have asked the director of the Education Department to enquire into the matter and submit the report by Friday," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.  The official who is in charge of administration claimed the decision was taken to ensure “peace, discipline and a good environment”. He stated that some of the children were fighting, but denied that the fights were on the basis of religion. “Of course children this young don’t know about religion, but they squabble over things. Some children are vegetarian, so there may be differences, and so on. We need to look after the interests of all teachers and students,” he told the Indian Express. When the Indian Express accessed the school’s attendance register, the names did indeed show a religious divide.

SP, Congress allies of Islamic terrorists; Mehbooba must go to Pakistan: UP minister

Date: 25 June 2021

An UP minister accused the Congress and Samajwadi Party of being "allies of Islamic terrorists", and said madrassas are helping in the religious conversion of the poor with people involved in it getting money directly in their accounts from Muslim countries. The allegations were made by Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Anand Swaroop Shukla, while talking to reporters. The minister also attacked PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti saying "her heart is in Pakistan" and asked her to go to Pakistan. "Facts have come to light that help of madrasas and voluntary organizations is being taken for the conversion and the people involved in the religious conversion of the poor and the deaf-mute children are getting money from Muslim countries in their personal accounts," Shukla said while talking to reporters at his residence here. "The conversion by inducing fear, greed and delusion is completely illegal and unconstitutional. The Yogi government and the ATS is taking and will take strict action against this," Shukla said, referring to the recent arrest of two men allegedly involved in running a campaign to convert the poor and deaf-mute children to Islam. Attacking the opposition, the minister accused them of being pro-Muslims. "The entire opposition, whether it be the Congress or the SP, they all are pro-Muslim, and to garner their votes, they hail Pakistan, saying Pakistan Zindabad and they say Hindustan Murdabad when they visit Pakistan. They have been left with no political dignity," said the minister.

Allahabad High Court Grants Bail To Man Booked Under UP 'Love Jihad Law', points out error by lower court

Date: 26 June 2021

The Allahabad High Court granted bail to a Muslim man booked and arrested under the Uttar Pradesh Love Jihad Law [The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020] for allegedly raping and unlawfully converting a Dalit woman. The Bench of Justice Vipin Chandra Dixit thus set aside the order of a lower court in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddha Nagar district noting that it erred in rejecting the bail application of the Muslim man who has been in Jail since March 2021. The bail applicant was booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation), relevant sections of the SC/ST Act, and Section 3/ (5)1 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020. His counsel submitted that the appellant had been falsely implicated in the case and that from the bare perusal of FIR, it was apparent that physical relations were developed with the consent of the victim.

11 years on, Gujarat court clears Kashmiri man of UAPA charges

Date: 27 June 2021

A sessions court in Gujarat cleared a Kashmiri man, Bashir Ahmed alias Aijaz Baba (43) of charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and ordered his release. He was arrested in 2010 on accusations of recruiting Muslim youths to send them to Pakistan for training and spread terrorist activities in India. Additional sessions judge S A Nakum rejected the Anti-errorism Squad’s case that Baba was associated with Hizbul terrorists. The judge said that no evidence was found that he was in touch with terrorist elements through electronic gadgets. The court observed that the prosecution relied on emotional argument and a person cannot be held guilty merely on its fear of cruelty.

Despite girl claiming she married Muslim man out of own will, Sikh groups claim forced conversion and marriage

Date: 28 June 2021

Sikh groups in Jammu and Kashmir held protests, alleging that two young women were kidnapped, converted and married off to elderly men. However, the charges were contested by authorities. While the police handed over the woman to her parents and arrested the man on charges of kidnapping, the woman in a statement before the court said that she had married him out of her own free will. The girl also released a video explaining the circumstances of her wedding, which she claimed had taken place in 2012. Akali Dal Leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa led a protest in Srinagar. He alleged that the 18-year-old Sikh woman was kidnapped at gunpoint, forcibly converted, and wedded to elderly men of a different religion. There have been four such cases out of which two were reported from Jammu, he alleged. The police, however, said they know of only one case so far. Police sources said they tried to find out the second case after allegations by Mr Sirsa but found that no such recent incident has happened in Kashmir. Also, while the Sikh groups alleged that the man arrested on charges of kidnapping is nearly 60, police sources said he was 29. One of the two women was “returned” to her family and later married to a man from her own community. Nasir Kheuhami, national spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association, tried to file an FIR against two politicians and a journalist for creating ‘communal disharmony’ in the alleged forced conversion row. A week later, a Srinagar court directed the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sadder to file a status report in connection with the case on cJuly 12, failing which action would be taken against him. Khuehami had approached the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Bhat on June 3, seeking the registration of an FIR against ex- SAD MLA and president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DGSMC) Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kashmir-based journalist Amaan Bali and BJP state president, Ravinder Raina for disturbing peace and creating communal disharmony in the Valley using protests and social media. Khuehami followed the legal route after the Bandipora and Kothi Baag police stations refused to register an FIR against Sirsa, Raina and Bali.

Hindutva outfits target Muslim street vendors

Date: 28 June 2021

After floating “land jihad”, “love jihad”, “corona jihad” and “civil services jihad”, a new kind of ‘conspiracy’ called “redi jihad” (street vendor jihad) was ‘unearthed’ by Hindutva activists intent on targeting Muslims in the national capital and elsewhere. The activists were from various radical Hindutva groups but local leaders from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party were involved in this communal campaign, as was at least one television news channel, the Noida-based Sudarshan TV. On June 18, 2021, a Muslim fruit vendor was brutally beaten in Uttam Nagar, New Delhi by unidentified men who were shouting ‘Jai Sri Ram’. Two days later, on June 20, Hindutva activists blocked a busy road  in the area to protest against what they said was violence and encroachment by ‘jihadi’ fruit sellers. The activists raised anti-Muslim slogans and gathered with lathis to send a “strong message” to the mostly Muslim vendors that they were not welcome in the neighbourhood. Later, in the evening, activists and local shopkeepers recited the Hanuman Chalisa in the middle of the road in a display of ‘Hindu unity.’ According to locals, the immediate cause of the current tension was a scuffle which had taken place a week before in which a local shopkeeper was allegedly attacked by one or more fruit sellers. In a live video streamed from Uttam Nagar on June 20, unidentified men said on camera that they had driven out Muslim vendors from the area. A Hindutva activist said all street vendors were Muslim. He alleged that they cheat customers and were a “walking cancer”. In Uttam Nagar, a review of social media posts and online comments from April 2021 indicates a deliberate and concerted effort had been made by right-wing activists to promote a communal angle to the dispute in the area. Apart from threatening to evict Muslim fruit sellers from the area by force, but the activists who descended on June 20 also called upon Hindus to stop doing business with Muslims. Sudarshan News, a far-right TV channel often accused of broadcasting hatred against Muslims, reported the Uttam Nagar protest in an extremely inflammatory manner. Throughout the show, Sudarshan reporter Sagar Kumar and anchor Shubham Tripathi referred to Muslims as “jihadis” and used other derogatory terms.

Man grows beard, forced to shave it off

Date: 28 June 2021

During his three years in Meerut prison, Tara Chand, 46, grew fond of a few fellow inmates, some of whom were Muslims. So, when he came out of jail recently, after some help from his Muslim friends, Tara Chand took on the name Tahir. He had begun sporting a beard too. On Sunday, after protests from a group of right wing men who accused him of converting to Islam under pressure, Tara Chand shaved off his beard. “I go to both temple and mosque. What is the harm in that? God cannot be two, it’s only one. How does it matter which method we choose?” he asked, still shaken from the backlash he faced from the Hindu group in Mau Khas village of Kithore, Meerut. Chand was released on May 19 last month. His first few days were peaceful, till someone tipped-off the village strongmen. With no member in the family left to stand by him, it was a lone battle for Chand, who finally shaved his beard last week. “I was in jail for 42 months. No one from my family turned up to help me. Usman and his friends helped me and arranged for the funds to fight my case. I spent a lot of time with Usman and others and began offering namaz with them. I also grew a beard like them. But I never got converted,” he said.

Zee News uses pictures of Muslims to spread rumours on population growth in India

Date:  28 June 2021

Hindi channel Zee News aired a debate on their 5 PM show ‘Taal Thok Ke’ on the topic of population growth, using the provocative title ‘Nature is just an excuse; Is the aim to raise Muslim population?” along with images of Muslims, including Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman. These are the two title screens of the show. One asks “Kudrat Bahana Hai, Muslim Abaadi Badhaana hai?” Nature is an excuse, the aim is to raise the Muslim population? The second blares, “Nizaam-e-Kudrat ya Hindustan par Aafat?” System of nature or disaster for India? The Uttar Pradesh government has launched an information campaign for two-kid families called “do bacche hi acche”. Rahman’s reaction to this campaign was, “Children are part of the system of nature. Nobody has a right to interfere with that.” Another comment on the campaign came from Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mehmood, who said, “Population is increased by Dalits and Adivasis because they don’t have jobs.” So, the show began with explaining what Rahman and Mehmood said followed by images of areas crowded by Muslim people. The show’s anchor Aditi Tyagi asked viewers whether it was wrong to preach “hum do hamare do” and why one particular religion was opposed to it. Activist Saket Ghokale later issued a notice to Zee News over the communal tweet under the new IT Rules, 2021.

Man files false case under anti-conversion law, media circulates false version

Date: 26 June 2021

Bulandshahr police decided to take action against a Dalit man for filing a false case under the anti-conversion law. Police said that the 46-year-old had got an FIR registered alleging that his minor nephew, who had gone missing for the second time in a month, was converted to Islam by a group of “unidentified people”. Police in their investigation, however, traced the boy to his aunt’s house in Jalandhar. The boy, who had been living with his uncle after his parents died seven years ago, denied that he had converted to Islam and told police that he fled from his uncle’s home as he used to regularly harass and beat him. This is the second time in a month when the allegation of the Dalit boy’s conversion to Islam circulated on social media. On Wednesday, June 23, Hindi daily Dainik Jagran claimed that on June 12 when Avinash returned home, he said that four moulvis of a city mosque and one woman converted him to Islam at the time of Eid. Avinash’s relatives approached Hindutva groups and then the police also intervened in the matter. The daily made these claims without any evidence. It also tried to link the story of Avinash with Maulana Umar Gautam who is currently detained by the UP Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for alleged forced conversions of 1,000 people. The Jagran report claimed that Nasir Khan, through whom Maulana Umar had converted nearly 40 years back, is also from Bulandshahr. A Hindi news website upcitynews.com claimed that Avinash used to perform Islamic prayer ‘namaz’ secretly and he even tried to change his address in the Aadhar card.
