The Assam government is mulling over an act that will require the bride and groom to declare their religion and income in official documents a month before their marriage, announced Health & Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that the proposed law was not entirely like ‘anti-love jihad’ laws in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh but would be similar.

Muslim leader asked “to prove patriotism” on air
Date: 6 December 2020
Category: Discrimination
All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad Member of Parliament (MP) Asaduddin Owaisi was asked by the host to prove his patriotism during a programme on the Hindi news channel ‘Aaj Tak’. The Hyderabad MP was debating with BJP National Spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi on a programme on AajTak, moderated by anchor Anjana Om Kashyap, on the results of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. Sudhanshu claimed that the ideology of Jinnah still prevailed in the country as many Muslims had voted for the Muslim League and the creation of Pakistan, but had remained in India afterwards. The anchor then asked Owaisi to prove his patriotism. After pointing out that only those Muslims who had voting rights at the time of Independence had voted in favour of Pakistan and those people had actually left later for Pakistan, Owaisi lambasted the host and the BJP representative. "Even after I go, you will keep asking 10 generations after me to prove their patriotism. Get lost. I'm not keen on getting a certificate of patriotism from them. I keep their certificate under my shoe. I am loyal to India and will always remain so," Owaisi said.

More than 140 petitions against CAA pending in SC for almost a year
Date: 6 December 2020
Category:Discrimination
Over 140 petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) have been pending for nearly a year in the Supreme Court, leaving petitioners “deeply disappointed” over the delay. The last time the CAA case came up in court was on March 3, 2020 when senior advocate Kapil Sibal made an urgent oral mention before the Chief Justice of India for a stay on the implementation of the law. He had said the case ran the risk of becoming infructuous. The CJI had indicated referring the case to a Constitution Bench, but said the court may first hear the review petitions pending in the Sabarimala case. March was the third time the petitioners had sought a stay of the law. In December 2019, the court similarly declined a stay while asking the Centre to make an all-out effort to disseminate the actual legislative intent of the citizenship law. In January 2020, the court, replying to another plea to stay the law, said CAA was “uppermost in everybody's minds”. The CAA fast-tracks citizenship-by-naturalisation process for persons from six religious communities, other than Muslims, who have fled persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
